Although we are well on our way into fall here in Brazil, the weather is still beautiful, 70s and perfect for trips to the beach! Last Thursday (May 1) was Brazil’s Labor Day and whenever a holiday falls on a Thursday, everyone also takes Friday off, so Michael, Colt and I joined 9 of our friends (+2 more babies!) and headed to the beach again! It was such an awesome group of friends, a super sick house, gorgeous beaches and what was, in my opinion, perfect beach weather — all in all I have to say it was one of my favorite beach weekends yet. Of course we were all too busy enjoying life to take too many photos but here is what I have!

Easter Weekend in Guaruja
To celebrate Easter this year, Michael, Colt and I joined 3 other sweet families – the Hudsons, Parkers and Winters – and went to a beautiful beach just outside of Guaruja. We have a very generous friend who lent us his family’s beach house mansion and we thoroughly enjoyed every moment: relaxing at the beach, swimming in the pool, playing games, cooking, and generally having a great time. We were a little spoiled as the Parkers brought their nanny AND the house has a maid so…it was really vacation. 🙂
Saturday was our big day at the beach and pool with Colt.
We took Colt down to the beach and, while he appreciated the beauty of it all, he wasn’t quite sure about the ocean.
Since he wasn’t digging the waves, we did what any good parents would do and buried him in sand!
Since the ocean was kind of a bust, we brought him up to the pool which he loved!
With the babies all on different schedules, it was hard to get a picture of them all together (and happy!) so this is the best we got.
On Easter Sunday, we got up early and headed to the beach for our version of a makeshift “Sunrise Service” with the Hudsons.
Back at the house everyone was enjoying the day, hunting for eggs or just hanging out.
So much to be thankful for this Easter!
PS – Just HAD to include this picture of Colt on the drive home. I mean, lips and cheeks for days, right?! I can’t handle it.
After Party: SF, Campbell & Napa!
After Mike & Moira’s fabulous wedding, Michael and I stayed for another week to enjoy the place where we first lived as a married couple and our favorite city in America – maybe the world – San Francisco. Michael was able to work out of the local Jones Day offices so it made it easy for us to stay an extra week, and even though he was working, we packed the social calendar as well.
We were thankful for the generosity of our friends, the Wendts, who hosted us in their guest-quarters in the Presidio from Sunday through Wednesday – Culhane especially loved it.
I don’t have pictures of everything we did but here is some of our itinerary. Sunday we went to our old church – City Church – with Michael’s parents and grabbed lunch afterwards with some friends. Sunday evening we went to our old favorite pizza spot, Paxtis, for some serious deep dish with Matty, Jon, and my dear friend Katie who lives in SF. During the week, Michael enjoyed morning runs in the Presidio and on Monday morning he did his old favorite – Lyon St. Steps – with Jon and Chambo.
Monday night the amazing Rector family hosted us for a fabulous dinner, as always. Tuesday I got to meet Katie for lunch at my old favorite taco spot – Tacko.
Tuesday night we met up with a group of old SF friends. None of us had babies when Michael and I lived in SF and now there are 4 babies within 9 months of each other!
Wednesday we were so excited to go visit Connor and Tara Lundy and meet their new little Isabelle who is adorable – I can’t believe I didn’t get a picture that evening!
Thursday, we headed south to the charming city of Campbell where Mike & Moira recently moved into a sweet new condo that they bought. It was really fun getting to see their town and their place and just to get to see them a little bit more. We had a fabulous dinner at their favorite Greek spot, Opa! and absolutely cherished our time with them Thursday and Friday.
Saturday, Culhane woke us up with the news that his second tooth had broken through! Yay!
That morning, on our way to Napa for the weekend, we stopped in San Francisco at Cafe Des Amis for a brunch with my dear São Paulo friend, Paige, and her friends and family. She was in San Francisco that week celebrating her birthday and we loved getting to see her and Mailey Jane.
We arrived in Napa on Saturday afternoon just in time to go straight to Cliff Lede for a tasting. Cliff Lede is the vineyard associated with the amazing Poetry Inn, where we stayed on our honeymoon, so it is a special spot to us.
Below is a picture of us in the same spot almost 4 years ago!
More at Cliff Lede:
That night we decided to try a new restaurant – R+D in Yountville and loved it!
Sunday was full of favorites. We spent almost the entire day at our favorite vineyard, Frog’s Leap. We first visited Frog’s Leap on our honeymoon and have been back at least 5 times. It’s a special place with fantastic wine, and something about it feels a little like home.
That evening we drove around, admiring the beauty that is the Napa Valley region.
Sunday night we dined at our favorite restaurant in the world — Michael Chiarello’s Bottega, and once again, the food and atmosphere totally lived up to our memories. Colt was a little all over the place during dinner – everywhere from sitting in a chair on a bumbo seat to on a blanket with toys under the table, but thankfully everyone was super nice about it.
The next morning we headed back to the airport for our flight home. We flew through Chicago and while the first leg was a little rough, it was only 3 1/2 hours and the overnight flight was much better – Culhane sleeping around 6 hours. Lucky #20 (as in, that was his TWENTIETH flight – bless his heart)!
All in all, the trip was fantastic. It felt so good to be back in a place that is so fun, beautiful and special to us, surrounded by people who we adore. It was also really neat to be able to bring Culhane with us and introduce him to more of our friends and show him the Bay Area! That being said, it was also a little tough. Teething, traveling and a 5 hour time-change are a lot to handle all at once. And, to exacerbate things, we never really sat still – we went out for almost every meal, and I was dragging Culhane around the city running errands all through the weekdays. He’s a champ though and it was totally worth it – absolutely LOVED our time back in the Bay!
Mike & Moira’s Wedding!
Michael and I had been looking forward to Mike & Moira’s wedding for a long time. They are dear friends and Culhane’s godparents, so it was very special to be there for their big day and share in the celebration of their love and joy.
We packed up and headed to the airport Wednesday night (Feb 19) so that we would get in on Thursday in plenty of time to get settled and be ready to participate in all wedding festivities.
Culhane had been particularly difficult and fussy in the days leading up to the trip and I was pretty sure that he was teething — the timing was right and all of the symptoms were there (although he never got a fever or anything) — but you never know for sure if that’s what’s happening because most of the pain occurs while the teeth are moving up – before they necessarily break through the gums and you can see them. Anyway, due to all of this I was nervous about the flights, and sure enough our overnight flight was BRUTAL. Colt was never able to sleep for more than 30 minutes at a time and I think that of the 10 hours, he was probably upset or crying for 7 of them. Thankfully the flight was pretty empty so I was never feeling too guilty for the sake of the other passengers (plus I’m pretty over that at this point). We’ve had so many easy flights in the past though that I guess we were due for a bad one — unlucky #17.
We flew through DC and Culhane was the only one smiling when we got there. We had a quick stop and then took to our second flight where, thankfully, he slept for the first 3 hours and then was pretty easy the last couple. Also we were able to bring our carseat onto both flights which was huge.
Even though our second flight had been better, when we landed in San Francisco Michael and I both felt (and looked) like we had just been run over. But, as we drove into San Francisco it felt so amazing to be back in our favorite city so we rallied and decided to go directly to our favorite brunch spot near our old apartment — Serpentine.
Colt gave us a break and slept through our brunch and after the amazing food and coffee, we felt refreshed and reenergized. After brunch we drove around our old neighborhood and marveled at all of the new construction in the area. Then we drove down the Embarcadero, past the Ferry Building, and finally up to the Presidio where we checked in at the fabulous Inn at the Presidio. We got settled and then cozied up at the Inn’s patio / fire-pit for some delish wine & cheese with the bride, groom and some friends.
The next morning Colt was excited to make lots of new friends and also see his Nana & Papa Harper who flew in for the weekend to help!
Jon Lennon – an unexpected natural.
The guys spent most of Friday on the golf course enjoying the beautiful weather.
The Rehearsal Dinner Friday night was held at Park Tavern and Mike & Mo even had caipirinhas on the menu! After an evening of great food and lovely toasts to the happy couple, we went out for more fun and drinks at Savoy Tivoli.
On Saturday — the morning of the big day — we awoke to Culhane’s first tooth popping through! We had been pretty confident that he was teething and started to see white on Friday, but Saturday is the day that it finally came through!
That morning, Michael and his dad took off early to set up the “Best Man Bar at Baker Beach” for the “Baker Beach Bro Bomb with the Bridegroom.” Although the water was, of course, freezing for the plunge, the day was about as beautiful as it could have been and the guys had a great time being idiots.
Saturday evening we all gathered at the Chapel of our Lady for an absolutely beautiful wedding ceremony. I wish I could say that I totally enjoyed it, but I was actually pretty nervous the whole time as Mike & Moira had kindly decided to have Culhane act as the Ring Bearer. Originally this was to be in-writing only and he wasn’t even going to go to the service, but Moira decided that it would be fun to have him come up during the blessing of the rings. I thought that it was an adorable idea but of course I was terrified that he would scream and I would have the baby who ruined the wedding. Thankfully Mike and Moira are pretty laid back and Culhane was pretty good so we all survived. And Colt loved showing off the tuxedo that his godparents had given him!
The beautiful, happy couple!

After the wedding, an awesome bag-piper led the guests from the ceremony to the reception at the Golden Gate Club.
The dinner was delicious and the reception was tons of fun, but Michael (and I) couldn’t fully enjoy it until after dessert when he gave his Best Man toast. He captivated the crowd for a solid 12 1/2 minutes, recounting funny memories and sharing his adoration for Mike & Mo.
Once that was over, we loosened up a little and reeeally started to enjoy the party.
I don’t have any pictures of the after-party at the bowling alley but suffice it to say that the night and the entire weekend was perfect. Thank you for including us!!

Beach Weekend (& Colt 7 months)
Last Friday, on Culhane’s 7 month birthday, we headed to the beach – Praia da Baleia – to join 12 other friends + 2 more babies for a beach weekend! We had a blast with our friends, but it was also a bit of a wake-up call that our baby boy is in a new stage that makes him a little less “portable.” Culhane’s current schedule is packed with him constantly feeding or eating something – often requiring some type of food preparation and high-chair set-up. It’s generally something like this:
7:30 am – Wake up and nurse
8:30 am – Fresh juice (which he doesn’t really like – so weird)
10:00-12:00 – Nap
12:00 pm – Lunch: Homemade veggie & meat soup (which he LOVES – even weirder)
12:45 pm – Nurse
2:45-3:15 – Nap
3:15 pm – Snack: Fruit
4:00 pm – Nurse
5:15-5:40 – Nap
5:45 pm – Dinner: Homemade veggie & meat soup
7:30 pm – Nurse
8:30-7:30 – Night sleep
(He’s in the midst of transitioning towards just 2 naps (merging the last 2) but that’s still a work in progress.)
Some of our “parent-fail” moments over the weekend included:
**Having to pull over 3 times on the 3 hour drive to the beach either to nurse, feed or just to try to get him to stop crying (little man doesn’t like to be cooped up in a car-seat during his play time!)
**Colt getting 5 mosquito bites upon arriving the first evening
**Trying to take Culhane to the beach Saturday morning and ending up getting sunscreen in his eyes causing quite the sad, swollen situation
**Trying to take Culhane to the beach Saturday afternoon to sit under an umbrella but the heat proved to be too much and it was nothing but tears
**Generally trying to get Colt (and ourselves) to sleep in the HEAT (90s during the day, maybe getting to the 70s at night) with no AC.
All that being said, we did still have a GREAT time with our amazing friends, and we had a TON of fun taking Colt to the beach Saturday evening after the sun had gone down. Here are some pictures from the weekend:

Culhane’s Baptism Weekend
As Michael and I boarded our plane, heading to the US for Christmas, we thought back to last year and how excited we were to visit our families and share with them our news that we were pregnant. It seemed like that was just yesterday, and yet there we were one year later, this time focused on how to get our 5 1/2 month old baby boy to sleep during the first 10 hour flight. Thankfully, Culhane was awesome during our travels – sleeping 8 hours in the “bassinet” on our overnight flight and then snoozing again for most of the second flight. He also happened to instantly adjust to South Carolina time, despite the 3 hour time-change – we are very grateful to have a good little traveler on our hands (at least so far)!
We arrived in South Carolina on Thursday Dec. 19 and were met by my sweet grandparents who were very excited to meet their great grandson for the first time!
They took us to my parents’ house where we got all settled in and reunited Culhane with his grandparents. He definitely remembered them after having just seen them in São Paulo for Thanksgiving.
On Friday we were so excited to welcome Michael’s parents to South Carolina! My parents hosted a party on Friday night to let our extended family meet Culhane and see Sharon and Ollie and it was so much fun.
Lots of photos in front of the tree!
My Aunt Sheryl basically catered the party and the food was delish!
Sharon and Ollie brought Culhane’s 125 year old baptismal gown to South Carolina and it turned out to be a total party show-piece! 3 layers + a coat!
My mom and one of her besties, Jane!

We loved getting to see my sweet niece, Augusta Clare! Sharon brought her some gifts and she loved playing with the bubbles with my mom.
The next day we toured Sharon & Ollie around downtown Columbia with a visit to the statehouse, my dad’s office and USC’s campus.
Next we went to nearby Congaree National Park, for a 2 1/2 mile stroll.

Saturday night my parents took us all out for a very special dinner at Garibaldi’s – the restaurant that Michael took my parents to when he asked them if he could marry me!
Then, Sunday morning was the main event – Culhane’s baptism! We had him baptized at my grandparents’ church, St. Peter Lutheran Church, where my niece, Augusta Clare, was also baptized. As I mentioned, the Harpers brought Culhane’s baptismal gown which had been worn by Ollie’s mother and her siblings (starting around 1890), Ollie and some of his cousins, as well as Michael and all of his siblings. Culhane was the first of his generation to wear the gown and Sharon went the extra mile to make it even more special. She had a long slip made (the longest, bottom layer in the photo below) which included the monograms of everyone who had ever been baptized in the gown. She also had the gown cleaned and had an “extender panel” added since our little guy was older than the other babies had been. Anyway, it was so over-the-top amazing and special and we absolutely loved it.

The beautiful baptism service, during which Culhane was a champ!
So thankful for God’s grace!

Culhane looking like the future Pope in the fabulous coat!
After the service we all headed to The Blue Marlin where my parents had reserved a special room for us to gather and celebrate together. And what a fun surprise when we arrived only to see that Culhane’s amazing godparents, Mike Saign & Moira O’Connell had sent a beautiful cake for us to enjoy! (Also, to their credit they were planning to be at the baptism, but we changed the location from Phoenix to South Carolina at the last second!)
Sweet Augusta Clare.

We were all sad to say goodbye to Sharon & Ollie that night, but it was so special to have them there. More on the rest of our time in SC and then our time in PHX soon!
Magic in Mississippi
Last month on November 16, my dear friend Emily Penn got married!
Emily and I were roommates in Washington DC and have remained close friends ever since. We were living together when I met/dated/got engaged to Michael and we were also living together when she met and started dating Kern. We were all so thrilled when they got engaged that Michael and I decided that going to the wedding was the perfect reason to do our first international trip with Culhane!
We took off on a Wednesday night and were lucky to have reserved a bassinet seat with United. They gave us a “bassinet” (aka a big shoe-box) that we put on the floor and after feeding a little at takeoff, Culhane slept for the next 7 1/2 hours! We flew through Houston and he was up for the last hour or two of the flight but was well-rested and happy – no tears! We had a quick connection and then arrived in Jackson, Mississippi Thursday morning only to be picked up at the airport by the bride & groom! What a luxury! Then we went to Emily’s house for breakfast, lunch and some good hang out time before getting checked into our hotel.
We enjoyed more quality time with the bride and her family for a fabulous southern dinner before settling in for the night. Since we were dealing with a 4 hour time difference we just kept Culhane up for an extra feed. He woke up the next morning at 6am which was a little early, but much better than 4am which I had been worried about.
Michael babysat Culhane Friday afternoon while I joined the girls for Emily’s bridal brunch. I don’t have pictures from it (because I was taking them all on her camera!) but it was so lovely and so Emily. It was also a great time to reunite with old friends and meet some new ones!
Friday night, Michael and I left Culhane with non-family babysitters for the first time ever to attend the Rehearsal Dinner. One of Emily’s girlfriends also has a little guy, so she let us bring Culhane over to her house and share her babysitters for both Friday and Saturday nights — so sweet! I felt pretty good about everything when we dropped him off, but a few hours into the night I made the mistake of calling to check in. The babysitter said that, although he was asleep then, Colt had been fussing and crying a lot. She almost sounded mad at me and I just burst into tears, wanting to hold and comfort my little love. Emily’s sweet friends offered to drive us back by the house to check on him but I knew in my head that he was OK and everything was fine, and we had made the trip so that I could be there for Emily, so we decided to just do our best to enjoy the rest of the night and I’m so glad we did. It was kind of a tough night for me but I also think it was good to just get it over with. Aside from that little hiccup, the night was amazing and was a beautiful tribute to Kern and Emily. So many people gave beautiful speeches testifying to their strong character as individuals and their love as a couple.

On Saturday afternoon, Michael babysat again as I spent the afternoon with Emily and the girls getting ready for the big night. She was seriously the calmest and most beautiful bride of all time. Michael left Culhane with a babysitter again and then joined me for the ceremony which was so lovely – only to be followed by a perfect, party reception!

The trickiest part was, because I had to leave Culhane with Michael or babysitters a lot and obviously I couldn’t pack any milk (and Culhane refuses formula), I was worried about being able to produce enough to feed him and pump enough bottles, but it actually ended up being like the loaves & fishes – God provided and there was extra left over that we tossed before heading back.
We headed to the airport on Sunday for a long trip home. We flew through Chicago which was experiencing tons of delays due to weather. We were lucky that our flight was only delayed a few hours and then we hit the jackpot with an empty seat on our row so we left Culhane in his carseat where he slept like a total champ for almost the entire flight.
Emily & Kern – thank you so much for including us in your special weekend and congratulations to you both!! XO
