Paige’s Amazing Visit!

When Michael and I moved to Brazil, Trent and Paige Hudson quickly became our newest, best friends. We actually first “met” Trent and Paige via a video Skype chat a week or so before moving there. Michael’s brother, Joe, had randomly met them as they were each on unique trips in Buenos Aires. They were staying at the same “estancia” – Villa Maria – and they connected over dinner there. They realized that they were all living in São Paulo but didn’t reconnect again until Joe and Trent literally bumped into each other on the streets of São Paulo some months later. The Hudsons had Joe over for dinner and, when we decided to move to Brazil, Joe instantly knew that they would be perfect friends for us. Joe put us in touch, they set up a Skype date and in our first conversation the Hudsons offered to pick us up from the airport, have us live with them and use all of their stuff… We did not take them up on any of this but did come to learn that this was a VERY typical Hudson move. Underplaying it, really.

Our first actual meeting was a day or two after we arrived in São Paulo. The Hudsons picked us up from our temporary apartment in their heavy-duty bullet-proof Highlander. They drove us all over the city pointing out important streets and POIs, intimidating me with Paige’s impressive sense of direction and Portuguese pronunciation and terrifying us with tales of being robbed at gunpoint. Then they took us to their favorite restaurant for an amazing afternoon of caipirinhas and conversations, feijoada and fun, and our friendship was unshakable from that point forward.

Over the next 4 years, Paige and I made countless memories together including trips throughout Brazil, local adventures in São Paulo, the joys and struggles of living life abroad, becoming moms (within a month of each other!) and then doing it a second time, and so many other details that only happen when you live daily life alongside someone.

And then we all moved. And daily life was no longer side by side. One of the hardest parts of our move was not being in such close proximity to our friends (OK so this post is about Paige but really we had such an amazing core group of friends there).

In March, I celebrated my 30th birthday. Michael and I took an awesome trip to celebrate. It was perfect and I wouldn’t have changed a thing. But I wasn’t with friends.

Paige and her family now live in South Africa. She’s due with her 3rd baby in June. She decided to fly across the world FOR A WEEKEND (so that she wouldn’t burden her family by being away for too long) to celebrate me for my birthday. She brought with her suitcases bursting with THIRTY gifts from South Africa. Treasures that are now placed throughout my house for me to see every day (vases, art, dishes, textiles, books), or pieces that I wear regularly (purses, jewelry) and remember that special weekend and my incredible friend.

We didn’t do anything extravagant but we spent all weekend hanging out and it was so great. Colt was almost just as happy as me, counting down the days to Paige’s arrival, squealing for joy when he saw her and never leaving her side the whole time. And Finn, her godson, was equally enamored.

Words can’t do it justice but thank you Paige!!

We are just not double stroller people…)

January 2016 Weekend Trips!

We were among the last of our São Paulo crew to make the move back from Brazil. This certainly made it much easier to move, as what we most loved about our time there no longer existed. When our group left Brazil we spread out far and wide. Portland, Minneapolis, Chicago, Denver, Phoenix, New York, DC, Philly, even Singapore and Johannesburg! It’s fun to have friends in so many cities but we also miss each other a lot so we try to get together whenever possible. Our first big reunion was a girls’ weekend in January. Suzanna Jones had just had her sweet baby girl so those of us who could, hopped on a plane to Denver to get together and see her little one. All of us who came had kids as well, but we did our best to leave them with husbands or family so that we could just enjoy each other, although Paige & I did bring our babies with us since they were still pretty young and were nursing so regularly but I was very thankful that my mom was able to watch Colt for me.

We don’t have too many pictures from the weekend 1) because we didn’t do a ton of photo-worthy things! and 2) we were too focused on long conversations and snuggling babies to remember to pull out our cameras. But at any rate, here is what I have!

The pictures obviously don’t do the weekend justice but it was SO good to get together with these special girlfriends to connect about life, motherhood, transitioning away from Brazil into our new chapters… We were missing Michelle, Colby & Paula this trip but next time, girls!

While I was in Denver for the weekend, Michael took the train from DC to New York to visit his brother Joe and hang out with friends in the city.

New Years in Arizona

…Struggling to get caught up here but still making an effort, so picking right back up where we left off and bringing us into 2016…

After a lovely Christmas in South Carolina, Michael and I headed to Arizona to celebrate New Years and for Finn’s baptism.

Upon arrival, we first spent a few days in Phoenix just spending time with the Harpers.

After a couple days in Phoenix, we headed up to Hidden Valley where the Harpers hosted my parents, my grandparents, my aunt Sheryl AND Finn’s Godparents, Trent & Paige Hudson + their two girls Mailey and Coralie. We spent those few days enjoying the beauty of Hidden Valley, hiking in Sedona, playing on the tire swing, watching football, snuggling babies, spending time together and having a blast.

What a BLESSING that we have such incredible families who are awesome individually but also that they love getting together as well!! Huge thank you to the Harpers for hosting and to my family for traveling out for the visit and to the Hudsons for being such close friends that you are family as well. These were such sweet days.

After a wonderful time in Hidden Valley, we all went back to Phoenix for Finn’s baptism. Somehow I don’t have many pictures of the actual baptism (who was taking pictures?!?) but here are a few.

Thanksgiving 2015 – Arizona

Upon our departure from Brazil, we flew directly to Arizona for Thanksgiving and to celebrate Vinay & Thu’s wedding, but our first stop was to Hidden Valley for a few days of bliss.

After a few days at Hidden Valley, we headed back to Phoenix for Vinay’s wedding celebrations. Vinay is one of Michael’s dearest friends from growing up – I think they met in 1st grade. Vinay is 1st generation Indian American and Thu is 1st generation Vietnamese American. Both families obviously have strong cultural traditions surrounding wedding practices and instead of pick & choose, the couple honored both families and just did EVERYTHING. The celebrations were pretty extensive so we didn’t attend everything, but here is a look at all of the weddings and events that we did go to!

2) Sangeet which included tons of amazing, choreographed dances by all of Vinay’s cousins and the wedding party (the groomsmen did great!) and even a solo sung by Thu to Vinay. This is right about the time when I was wishing I was Indian…so much fun!IMG_1502IMG_0660

It was such a blast and an honor to participate in all of Vinay & Thu’s beautiful wedding celebrations. They are an awesome couple with such warm, welcoming and FUN families. Congratulations again to Thu & Vinay!

The wedding caused us to delay Thanksgiving until Saturday but after a jam-packed few days, it was great to just relax with family.

Finn’s 1st Birthday Party!

To celebrate Finn turning 1, Michael and I invited some friends over for a little cornhole and cupcakes in our backyard. His birthday coincided with the Arlington County Fair which happens to be right across the street, just steps from our front yard, so we had people over from 2-5 so that friends could check out the Fair before / after the party. We were also super fortunate to have my parents in town to celebrate with us too!

Nov 2015 – Beco do Batman Photo Shoot!

In an attempt to get a Christmas card photo and take advantage of one of São Paulo’s coolest backdrops, we went to famous Beco do Batman (Batman Alley) with the Hudson family for a little photo shoot. While I think that both families walked away with some great family pictures, some of the sweetest moments were between Colt & Mailey. True best friends.

The end!

October 2015 – Paraty Beach Week!

So… it’s been a while since I was in the habit of blogging regularly. Last October to be exact. That’s when we started shifting our focus towards surviving a transcontinental move with 2 kids, 2 & under. Now that things are finally settling down, I’m HOPING that I can get back in the swing of it. There are a lot of current happenings that I want to write about but I also feel the need to catch up on some of the events that I missed, so I’ll probably do a mix of both as I’m able. Hopefully more pictures, more posts, less detail.

But picking up where I left off, at the end of October (October 29 – November 2) we did a beach week with two other families – the Hudsons and the Parkers. We rented an amazing, full-service house, brought along Paige Hudson’s sister Hannah, 2 babas (nannies), and had one of the best trips EVER.

The house was right on the beach and was conveniently next door to a casual beachfront bar/restaurant. They would deliver food & drinks to our house and let us have a running tab throughout the week. The house rental included a full staff who kept the place in tip-top shape despite lots of little feet tracking sand all over the place. We decided to have the staff at the house prepare dinner for us 3 of the nights and the other night we went out into town for dinner while the babas watched the kiddos.

The weather was mostly beautiful. We got rain one day but it was still warm and the water felt great so we all just played in the rain!

Looking back through the photos is bittersweet. It’s a wonderful memory but a clear reminder to me just why my transition to life back in the states is taking some time. We were surrounded by incredible friends who have become our family. We partied together, had our kids together, had our 2nd kids together… We lived in such a gorgeous country and loved having adventures together. We had HELP! Amazing nannies & maids who we adored, who loved our kids and helped to fill the void that assistance from close family often provides. Anyway, I absolutely love these memories but when I look through the pictures of our kids playing in the sand together for hours, it tugs at my heart. But enough talk, more pictures!

Dinner at the house.

The one minor hiccup of the trip was the drive home…
For reference, our drive TO the beach took us about 4 hours. However, we were driving home at the end of a holiday weekend so we knew that we would hit traffic there. We trusted Waze and unfortunately it steered us wrong this time and we ended up with an 11 HOUR DRIVE! 9:30 am – 8:30 pm. With a 2 year old and a 2 month old. It was like an overnight flight back to the states only far worse because a) it was during the day so we were all awake, b) we all needed to eat & go to the bathroom, c) you can’t go for walks or generally move much at all, d) we were crammed into our tiny little car, etc. etc. etc.  At this point I was nursing Finn 5x/day which is also difficult to do while on the road. Basically it was a total disaster. We hated having to stop for bathroom breaks so I hardly ate or drank anything all day and from this, 2 things resulted: 1) I only took 1 bathroom break the whole ride home and it was in a gross, wet bathroom with a toilet that had no seat and 2) It took me a full week for my milk supply to pick up again. After starving myself and feeding Finn all day I was so depleted. Also fun – Colt puked twice on the drive home – the second time when we were just about 10 minutes from home. The blessing is that we had a beach bucket easily accessible in the back and were able to catch/contain them both times. Anyway, it was truly a harrowing event but the boys were AMAZING. Colt literally never cried – even with the sickness – and we timed a grand total of 4 minutes of crying for Finn. Truly a miracle. Ultimately though, São Paulo & Brazil is known for horrendous traffic so we just count it all part of the experience. 😉
