36 Weeks (then & now!)

36 Weeks!

36 Weeks – then and now!

During my pregnancy with Colt my water broke at 36 weeks and 6 days and he was born at exactly 37 weeks so this is the last comparison that I’d be able to do!

How far along: 36 weeks.
Baby updates: I am thankful that things continue to progress perfectly uneventfully. I have my next appointment on Monday but I think the baby is somewhere around 6.5 lbs.
Mamma updates: Also thankful that I am feeling great. Of course I’m in the big, uncomfortable stage of pregnancy but for some reason I truly feel the best during the third trimester and I continue to feel really good each day. I am a little tired but I’m still sleeping pretty well (despite getting up 3x/night to pee!)
With a limited amount of time left as a family of 3 we are really trying to soak in these last moments as well as get ourselves prepared for our new arrival. Michael and I are truly enjoying Colt more and more each day and can’t believe what a big boy he has turned into.
Although I know that there is only so much you can do to prepare, I feel like every day we are more and more ready. Our bags are packed, the bassinet and bouncy seat are set up, newborn diapers are out and I’m checking things off my to-do list every day so that when the baby arrives we are free to just focus on our family.
Things I miss: Normal clothing! I even resorted to doing the rubber band trick with some of my regular jeans a couple days ago because I’m just so over maternity jeans.
Cravings: Chocolate. Big time.
Weight: +18 — I’ve stayed a few pounds behind where I was each week in my previous pregnancy (at this point last time I was +22) although I have no idea how or why. Regardless, the baby is big and growing each week so that’s the important thing.
Best moments: It’s been great to be back home these past 3 weeks and Michael and I are just enjoying time with our friends, time with Colt and most importantly time with each other. We are so excited about meeting our baby and growing our family, but similarly to how we felt before Colt was born, we are really happy as we are now, so there is always that slight feeling of wanting to hang onto what you have. But of course we don’t want things to stay exactly as they are – we are so thrilled for this upcoming change – and we hold everything we have with open hands to the Lord to give and take away as He pleases and as the seasons change. So for now I’m looking forward to this new season – a sleep-deprived blur full of snuggles, new baby smells and sweet 2 year old fun.

Vail!

Two years ago, in celebration of Michael’s dad’s 70th birthday, his whole family gathered in Vail to celebrate. Well, everyone except for Michael and me, and thank goodness because Ollie’s birthday turned out to be the day that Colt arrived! Anyway, his family loved their time in Vail and has continued the tradition since, but this was our first year to be able to join.

On Saturday, June 27, the Joneses drove us up to Vail to join Sharon and Ollie. We were the first of the “kids” to arrive so we were able to enjoy a couple of days with Michael’s parents on our own. The Harpers were incredibly generous and put everyone up at the Ritz Residences in Vail so our little family had our own two bedroom “condo” for the week which was great for Colt to have his own room and for us to have a full, functioning kitchen for him. During our week in Vail we took advantage of relaxing, exploring, hiking and most importantly, spending time with family.

While we were in Vail we were lucky to celebrate a few occasions. The fist was Sharon & Ollie’s 47th wedding anniversary and next up was Christy’s 39th birthday. For her birthday we had a party by the pool and the family cooked up a delicious meal.

A Day in Denver

After a wonderful stay in South Carolina, our next stop was Denver, CO. There were no direct flights from SC so Colt and I flew through DC so that we could pick Michael up en-route. This was great since I was 32 weeks pregnant which makes holding a toddler in your lap for a long flight less than ideal. Colt and I got lucky on our flight to DC and he was able to have his own seat in which he promptly made himself right at home.

Right at home on the plane. And yes, he put a diaper on his bunny.

Right at home on the plane. And yes, he put a diaper on his bunny.

I was very thankful to have Michael with us on the next leg since we were delayed and there were no extra seats on the plane for Colt. After a long day of traveling, we were SO happy to be greeted in Denver by our dear friends, Jeff and Suzanna Jones! The Joneses were some of our first and dearest friends in São Paulo and we were devastated when they moved from SP to CO in January so it was wonderful to get to see them, hang out and see their life in Denver. Which is awesome.

We arrived late on Thursday and were heading to Vail Saturday morning so our only day in Denver was Friday. We spent Friday morning trying to recover from the previous day’s travels and from the 2 hour time-change as the Joneses worked. That afternoon Suzanna took us to visit Jeff’s office which is, hands down, the coolest work space I have ever seen. He works for a company that developed the space so it was really fun to get to see it. We went from there to a nearby Mexican restaurant which was delicious and perfect because as the Joneses know, good Mexican food is basically impossible to find in SP! Denver is a very dog-friendly city so they brought their adorable dog, Canela, and we all sat outside in the sunshine for the afternoon. Later that day we all met up for happy hour with more former São Paulo friends, Amy and Anand – and their adorable new addition Khush. Even more fun, Suzanna’s sister, brother in law and their dog Piper came as well!

The next morning the Joneses generously agreed to drive us to Vail where we were meeting up with Michael’s family, but first we had one important stop on the way: brunch with the Kopps! Michael’s cousin Shannon and her family live in the Denver area so on our way to Vail we went by their home where they hosted us all for a fabulous brunch outside on the front lawn under a tree. It was perfect weather and such a beautiful setting.

Summer in South Carolina

After the wedding in PA, Colt and I flew with my parents to South Carolina. Michael had some work to do in Brazil before coming to visit but then he came for a few days before taking off again for work in DC.

South Carolina was H-O-T so a lot of our time was spent playing in water — blow-up pool in the yard, playing with the hose, swimming at our cousins’ pool and my grandparents’ house at the lake, playing in the sprinklers at the park and even playing in the rain!

We spent Father’s Day weekend with my grandparents at the lake. Michael, Colt and I spent Saturday night with them and after dinner we took a boat ride around the lake. The night was so beautiful, weather was perfect and Colt loved it. Then we were able to go to church on Sunday with my grandparents – the church where Colt was baptized – so that was a treat. Sunday afternoon my brother’s family, my mom (my dad was traveling) and aunt all came to the lake for the day to celebrate Father’s Day. My Aunt Sheryl came fully loaded with everything to make a fantastic shrimp boil followed by homemade ice cream – both peach and cookies & cream. To die for! Such a fun day!

Wedding in the Poconos

Last week we returned home from a whirlwind trip all over the US and it all started with a wedding in the Poconos. A cousin on my dad’s side got married on June 13 (check out the awesome NYT coverage on the wedding here – they have such a cute story!) and in addition to it being a fun, beautiful weekend, it was also a bonafide family reunion which was extra special since we don’t get to see my dad’s side of the family very often.

Colt making himself comfortable as we get set up on the plane.

Colt making himself comfortable as we get set up on the plane.

The wedding was held at the Pocono Lake Preserve, a private camp in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania. The camp totally has the feel of Dirty Dancing since when it’s “in season” families come stay for the summer and there are daily activities for kids, adults, etc. I think there are around 105 properties or “camps” on the preserve and each “camp” generally has 1-3 houses on it. Since the wedding took place before “season” starts (July 4), many property owners opened up their camps (or houses) for wedding guests to stay. We shared a house with my parents and my brother’s family and then some of my cousins who also have young kids stayed in another house on the same camp. Even more fun was that in between the two houses was a huge “playground” area for the kids! So basically a beautiful, natural setting, lots of space to run and play, lots of kids to play with and lots of family to help watch the kids — it was parent kid heaven! And honestly, I don’t know if it was just the timing or being with family or the open space or what but from our first day there, Colt seemed to come alive in a new way. He was so much more animated, less timid, more talkative and playful (although he still gives the MOST serious looks for all photos) than we had ever seen him before, and he’s truly been different ever since. I love it.

Helping me pack for the states!

Happy Birthday Colt! 2 Years.

Happy Birthday Colt! This week you turned 2 years old! IMGL0926

Colt Developments: Colt, your dad and I are absolutely obsessed with you, this stage and this age. You are so easy these days and so, so much fun. You have us laughing every day with the funny things you do and we are constantly amazed at your cleverness. I think this year is going to be the most fun yet as we just love seeing more of your personality, hearing more of your thoughts and generally getting to know you and experience you as a person more fully.

We just arrived home from an almost-month-long trip to the US on Monday (perfectly timed so as not to have to buy you your own seat one final time!), and while your dad and I had a fabulous trip, I think you loved it more than anyone. I’ll post more details about the trip soon but your dad and I felt like we watched you come alive in a new way while we were in the states. Although our time in the US may have made your Portuguese take a slight hit, your English vocabulary grew every day as did your confidence speaking. Most of your sentences aren’t quite grammatically correct (especially if it’s more than 2-3 words in a row) but you’re very good at stringing words together to convey your thoughts and ideas.

You are opinionated about everything going on and love to direct everyone in the room as to what they should be doing or where they should be sitting or standing. If someone isn’t where they “should” be, you will either point, pat a spot on the floor or take their hand and move them.

Your favorite song to sing is “Twinkle Twinkle” and we hear you sing it to yourself almost every night in your crib. Your favorite song to request others to sing is “Are you sleeping?” or “Frere Jacques” (you switch between which of the two you want to hear very quickly).

You’ve gotten very into “by-self” lately and love doing things by yourself and announcing that you have done it by yourself as well.

You’re a seasoned traveler and have taken over 40 flights in your 2 little years of life!

Health: Praise the Lord you continue to be perfectly healthy. Even with all of our recent traveling you never even caught a sniffle. You had your first real haircut in South Carolina and it was so much fun. You ate animal crackers the whole time so therefore you were very good at sitting still. It wasn’t a ton of hair but just the same it seemed to transform you from a baby into a little boy even more. You’re still around 27-28 lbs, wearing 2T clothes and size 4 diapers. The one thing I’m waiting on are those 2 year molars. I’d love to get them in before the new baby comes so that it’s out of the way!

Feeding: Still a picky little eater and very resistant to trying anything new but we are working with you on it, slowly but surely. Your favorite foods are yogurt, bananas, cheese, crackers, bread, pasta, rice, apple sauce, dried apricots, raisins, nuts, and those smoothie type squeeze pouches. Everything else basically has to be snuck in but thankfully we’re still able to trick you a little.

Sleeping: Best sleeper ever. Even though all of our travels and time changes you never gave us a hard time on sleeping. In South Carolina you would do 11-12 hours at night and then take 3 hour naps during the day. In Vail you were only napping about an hour and a half during the day but then at night you would sleep for 13+ hours. This is something I am incredibly thankful for and do not take for granted.

Schedule: Your schedule is basically the same as last month:

8:00 Morning wake up and drink milk
9:00 Breakfast
10:00-12:00 Play time
12:15 Lunch
1:00-3:00 Nap then wake up and drink milk
4:00-6:00 More play time
6:15 Dinner
7:30 Clean up toys, brush teeth, get ready for bed
8:00 Lights Out!

Mama: My precious treasure, Colt. What a blessing it is to be your mom. You are truly a joy and bring love, laughter and light into our hearts and our home every day. I am cherishing these days with you and feel so torn about the fact that soon you will not be our one and only. On the one hand I am so excited to meet our new addition and can’t wait to see you as a big brother – I know you’ll be amazing. Plus I do believe that getting a sibling is a gift to you as well. But on the other hand my heart hurts at the thought that I won’t be able to focus as fully on you. I know that it’s for the best but little love, I am so happy pouring my whole heart into you each day. I love feeling like I haven’t missed a single thing with you. And I fear that the exhaustion or just the need to divide my time and attention between two will mean that I’ll miss something. Miss moments, smiles, giggles. You just can’t imagine how much I love each little thing with you. But I have faith in God’s plan for our family so we continue on in excited anticipation of what is to come, but I’m still treasuring these next few weeks all the more and squeezing you a little tighter each day. And no matter what, you’ll always be the one who made me mom. I love you Colt.
