Apartment Tour: Living Room

In response to requests from my girlfriends (and let’s be honest, who doesn’t love checking out other people’s places), I’ll be posting pictures from our apartment to give you a mini apartment-tour!

I am not super creative and most of what we have is a combination of what we had individually before we got married & stuff we bought immediately into our marriage – since which time my tastes have significantly changed. ย Also, there are a lot of weird things about apartments in Brazil, so…not the easiest canvas either. ย That being said, we have more than we need or could ask for and are thankful for all of it. ย ๐Ÿ™‚

First up on the tour is the Living Room:
Some credits:ย
Pillows: Layla Grace (multi-colored) andย Furbish Studio
SF Print: Ikea
Couch: Pottery Barn
Gray Side Chairs: Home Goods
Brazilian Cowhide Rug: purchased in Columbia, South Carolina ๐Ÿ™‚
Chunky Knit Throw Blanket: Made by my Aunt Sheryl!

Things I still want to do in here:
1) I would love to paint the room a pale gray to give it a little more character / definition.
2) I am in debate about putting up drapes. ย I usually love them but the space is so small I’m not sure if it would crowd it too much…? ย If I did anything I think they would need to be light / sheer.
3) The floor lamp…should I paint it?? ย I’m not a fan but am trying not to buy much home stuff until we move into an actual HOME one day, at which point I’ll want to get a lot. ย ๐Ÿ™‚
4) If you are wondering about the “coffee table,” it’s an Ikea coffee table and side table pushed together. ย We bought them right after getting married as a temporary solution until we found something we loved, but never found the right thing and kind of forgot about it…

  1. Oh my gosh! LOVE this post! I think drapes would really soften the look of the room. Hang them high–and it will make the room look bigger. Love the pillows and rug. Would you consider using ASCP on the coffee table? A lighter color there might help highlight the rug . Just a thought!

    I want to see more!

    • Thanks Em! Love the suggestions. Due to the feedback I am thinking I should really look into drapes. I had never thought of painting the tables, mostly because they are so crappy I am afraid of highlighting them in any way…that’s the reason I sort of appreciate that they blend into the rug…although you’re making me think about it….

      • This may sound weird…but look on Pinterest for curtain ideas. It helps me a lot! Also…just curious…how would you say your design tastes have changed over the past year or so?

      • I have totally been looking on Pinterest! My mom said she would help me make some drapes if we found cool fabric, although I am having a hard time figuring out what would look good…
I should send you a picture of our SF apartment living room to show you the evolution already but I think when we first started buying stuff, all I really knew was like, my parents’ style and now that I have been introduced to Pinterest and design blogs…well, it’s totally different. ๐Ÿ™‚ It’s good and bad bc the images are so inspiring but also make me want to throw out everything I own and start new. ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. Cute!!! Thanks for sharing – miss you Ash! I say you should absolutely put in drapes. If you keep them to the side, framing the window/door, they won’t feel as crowded at all. Hang them as high up as possible (if you can get/make long drapes) to help make the room feel even taller. I am in favor of painting the lamp. I say you go with a blue of burgundy tone from the pillows. You could even makeover the lampshade too if you really wanted to spruce it up ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Christie! I love getting your design feedback. It’s like having a personal designer! I think I should do the drapes and I love your thoughts on painting / sprucing up the lamp! Also very interested in the story on the balcony lights you Instagramed — maybe I can spruce up our little balcony! ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. I feel like I just had an invitation and then a visit at your home so I loved this BLOG. I am lonesome for you two so this was great. What a great and cozy place you have made. Now, I hope for the dining room tour. Love! Mom

  4. Def agree on loooooong drapes, hung very high. Will cozy it right up. Also – rather than painting your lamp, you might consider a colored lamp shade — something that could tie in with your accent pillows. Small investment now for something you might not keep later.
LOOOOVE seeing where you are. Still trying to figure out the in-person visit timeframe ๐Ÿ™‚
