Colt’s 1st Birthday Party!

Although we’re not living in the US, normally on the 4th of July Michael & I get together with other expat friends and celebrate America! This year, however, on July 4th we were all totally focused on Brazil’s World Cup game. Therefore, we decided to celebrate the 4th of July on Sunday (July 6th) when we celebrated Colt’s birthday – just 1 day before his actual, July 7 birthday, with a patriotic picnic in the park. Although we’re in the dead of winter, the weather was absolutely gorgeous – high 79 and sunny! It was a perfect day to be outside, hanging out and playing games with friends.

I made the tassel-streamers and was bummed when the park "guards" told us that we weren't able to hang anything from the trees, but we improvised by tying them up to the strollers - thanks to Brett for the genius idea!

Happy Birthday Colt! 1 Year.

Sweet Baby Colt, today is your birthday dear love!DSC_0386

Colt developments: Angel. You are growing up just right. In the past 3 months since I wrote your 9 month post so many things have changed. During that time you perfected your crawling and became a little speed demon! And then, just a week ago, you took your first steps! Last Sunday you were standing on your own (as you have loved to do ever since you could pull up) and I saw you slightly adjust your foot. You just moved it a tiny bit and definitely didn’t go anywhere, but I immediately knew that you were ready to start walking (which actually surprised me because you’re so cautious that I thought it could be a while). The next day I really worked on it with you and by lunch you were walking 2 steps at a time between furniture or to me and by that evening you would walk up to 5 steps. By Wednesday you were walking 10-12 steps in a row and now you’ll walk up to 20-25 steps in a row! You are still getting the hang of it and often drop down to crawl, but what a quick learner you are! I think you like it and you’re proud of yourself when you get a good walk-session in, always with a big smile on your face.

You’re not a huge talker but you do say “Dada,” “Mama,” and “Uh-oh.” You babble other things and some days you are very chatty but in comparison to your girlfriend Mailey (who has created her own language and speaks it constantly), you’re a little bit on the quieter side. You love to hang upside-down, be tossed in the air, clap your hands, wave to people, read books and explore whatever is around. You’re latest “party-trick” is putting your hands on your head when we tell you that you’re under arrest. It’s pretty cute, although it may be sending you the message that it’s fun to get arrested…Over the past couple of months you have also started to snuggle more and more and will snuggle in my arms or just lay your head down and put your arms around a stuffed animal or anything soft. It’s very cute and I think you know that we like it because you’ll snuggle up to something and then quickly look over at us for the “awe” moment. I love it though.

Currently your favorite toys are not toys at all – you love getting your hands on anything that is not for you! Whether it’s a drawer full of post-it notes and note-cards, the vacuum cleaner, plugs, pots & pans, even trash – you’re into it! You definitely keep me on my toes these days and I really can’t leave you alone for even a minute.

Your personality has been consistent through the first year as a happy, sweet, serious, cautious and observant little guy. Your default face is quite serious although you’re a very happy boy. You’re flexible and do well in new environments and around new people and your dad and I continue to drag you everywhere with us. You have been on 24 flights already and are an expert traveler.

The one concern that I have sweet boy is that you’re so sweet. I sometimes worry how you’ll do one day when I’m not there to comfort you when you’re hurt, or if you’ll be OK if a bully at school picks on you. You definitely seem more sensitive and less aggressive by nature, but it also makes me wonder if I’m doing things that foster that sweet side of you more. I think that your sweetness is a total blessing and it is a wonderful quality for a little boy, but as your mama, it also makes me worry just a little. Your dad and I just keep trying to create space for you to explore new environments, away from us when possible, and be around other babies as much as we can. We leave you in daycare at church, you have lots of play-dates with your friends here and we leave you with babysitters pretty regularly. And you do great with all of this. I just want you to be confident in who you are. To be brave. To have adventures. To not be afraid to take risks every now and then. To have courage not only to stand up for yourself but for others also. You are strong and I want you to know it.

Health: Colt, your dad and I praise our God all the time for your health. We are so thankful that in your first year, despite the dirt, trash and other things you put in your mouth, you have not had any sickness beyond teething symptoms (runny nose, low grade fever for a day or so and one real throw-up). We visited your doctor today and learned that you are 20.3 pounds and 30 inches tall. You continue to be right on track as we have just recently transitioned you into all 12-month clothes. You’re still in size 3 diapers but I think we might go up to 4 soon. (*Note: You might be a Brazilian baby but so far you’ve only worn American diapers – as in, we have yet to buy any diapers here in Brazil. The quality is just much lower and the price much higher so…we pack them in our suitcases…and our friends’ suitcases…) You currently have 8 teeth – the 4 middle on top & bottom – and your toothy little smile is so adorable. Your eye color continues to confuse me – people will say everything from gray to blue to green to hazel. I tend to think they are a steel-blue-gray but lately I’ve been seeing more brown in the middle… Your sweet, fine, blonde hair is growing slowly but surely. I love my little loirinho.

Feeding: Right now you are nursing 3x/day, eating 3 meals/day and drinking juice and sometimes snacking throughout the day as well. We have continued to make all of your food and normally make you an apple/pear/berry sauce and then savory meals with meat and veggies. We have pretty much been puréeing all of that for your major meals but you also snack on yogurt and finger foods like beans, cooked fish, lunch meat, cheeses, fruits, etc. Although I know that you “can,” you’re not that great at feeding yourself and whenever I try it out you end up throwing food all over and make a huge mess. Therefore, I’ve kind of been slack on pushing this skill since I just don’t have the patience for the mess, plus I like to be sure you are getting the nutrients you need. AND if I’m preparing food for you, it makes me cringe to see it end up on the floor. Nonetheless, it’s getting to be time that you do it so we are doing a little at each meal – starting with foods that don’t make a huge mess when they are thrown.

I am about to start the weening process over the course of the next month and am both happy and sad about it. Your doctor says you’re totally ready for regular milk and honestly we’ve made it longer than I necessarily thought we would, but it’s definitely something I’m going to miss (I’m actually getting teary-eyed just typing this!). It’s been such a unique and special thing for me to be able to personally feed and nourish you for the 9 months of gestation and then for your whole first year of life, and I’m so thankful that it worked out for us. That being said, I have yet to spend more than a 8 hours away from you and I think that it’s time for us to create more space for ourselves in this way.

Sleeping: You are napping twice/day for a total of about 3-3.5 hours and sleeping about 11.5-12 hours at night. You’re a great sleeper and generally don’t make a fuss about going down for naps or at night. You always sleep in your sleep-sack and have pacis and some snuggly toys with you. We have decided that pacis are now just for in the crib, car-seat or when you’re with a babysitter. It’s not that I really think you’re too old for them yet but we want to allow you to focus on speech and language development while you’re up and at ’em.

Schedule: You’ve been on an awesome schedule for the past couple of months.

7:45am Wake & Nurse
8:30am Breakfast (banana & apple sauce or yogurt)
10:15-12:15 Nap
12:30pm Lunch (meat & veggies)
1:30pm Nurse
3:00-4:15pm Nap
6:00pm Dinner (meat & veggies + juice)
6:30pm Bath
7:20pm Nurse
8:00pm Down for the night.

You are pretty much like clockwork on this schedule and generally we allow you to be our alarm-clock in the mornings. This normally works out great, but you do sleep in a little every now and then. Recently, Dad had a 9:00am meeting and when we woke up to your sweet little sounds at 8:40am it was almost a disaster! Thankfully we were so well rested from the extra hour you gave us that we were able to get him out the door in record time and he juuuuuust made it.

Mama: It really feels like these are my glory days. The past few months have been nothing short of incredible. (Months 10, 11 & 12 have been by far my favorite!) I am genuinely the happiest I have ever been, and you, sweet Angel Baby Colt, are a huge part of that. I’m just so content with our little family of 3 and am loving all aspects of life right now. I know that there are seasons to life and this one is just full of celebrating the joys and fun of each day.

Thoughts: I keep remembering that special day, one year ago today. What a surprise and a gift that we got to meet you 3 weeks early! Baby Colt, you are a blessing and we have treasured getting to know you and care for you and love you this past year. We are so excited for the days and weeks and years ahead with you little love.

For the last week of May, we were thrilled to have Sharon & Ollie visiting with us! It was a quick visit that flew by, but we packed in tons of fun, laughter and of course, snuggle time with Colt.

MONDAY: They arrived on May 26 and came over to the apartment to see Colt as soon as possible. He was so excited to see them but just to be sure they would win his favor, they brought a special toy, “Wink.”

Lately: April & May 2014

I can’t believe that we are getting towards the end of May already! At the Harper household, we are starting to get excited about Nana & Papa Harper’s upcoming visit next week, but before they get here, I wanted to post some pictures of the everyday stuff that we’ve been up to lately.

Although things have been really amazing the past couple of months, there have also been a couple of tough moments too.

After returning from South Carolina at the beginning of April, Colt gave me a little bit of a hard time. There was a week during which Michael was traveling for work and Colt was getting his third tooth (the left canine) and he had SUCH a hard time with it. Honestly he was like a completely different baby (so much so that we named this alter-ego Franklin — no offense to any Franklins out there), crying constantly, always needing to be held, not eating well and really not sleeping well. His naps were all over the place and he would wake up once or twice each night with terrible crying. He also had a runny nose, a low-grade fever for a day and one morning when I went to get him from his crib, he had thrown up all over. It was the saddest and grossest little sight – the throw up was matted in his hair and down his sleep-sack. I also realized that he wasn’t quite as good at chewing as I had believed as there were big chunks of black-beans everywhere! Gross. Poor Michael felt so badly being gone (he even surprised me by ordering an amazing sushi delivery for me one day) but honestly it was for the best. He needed to be able to focus on work and I needed to be able to focus on Culhane. Once the tooth popped through he was a lot better, but truthfully all of April was a little touch-and-go.

I think another aspect that made it tougher was his newfound mobility. I am definitely in the chasing-stage and I am constantly amazed at how fast Colt is and how he is consistently most drawn to things that are not for him / dangerous. I mean, who can blame him though — why play with bins full of brightly colored, soft, noisy toys when you can play with an outlet, a trash can, toilet paper or a bottle of olive oil? Poor thing – our apartment is so small and so not-baby proof and he’s at the point where he can move quickly to things but doesn’t yet really get what’s off limits… Anyway, gone are the days of being able to set him down in one room and do something in another. This means that it’s become really hard for me to “accomplish” anything while he is awake during the day. He only naps for 2 1/2 hours so if I am going to shower/get ready, eat lunch, clean up the house and check my email, I am pretty much done. Plus, by the end of the day I’m usually exhausted and sometimes even sore from all of the bending and carrying etc. etc.

Another thing that’s a smidge tricky is that I make all of Colt’s food. I’m not against buying pre-made stuff at all and we use it when we’re traveling, but being here I’m just not crazy about the quality, selection or the price, so I have just made it all myself. This wasn’t such a big task at first but he eats so much now that I feel like I’m constantly trying to keep up with him. And again, it’s something that I have to do during naps or at night because if I’m cooking or cleaning in the kitchen, he follows me in and races straight to all kinds of bad things! (Side note: If anyone out there also made their baby’s food and has any great recipes, I would love to see!)

During the month of April I got so worn down trying to keep up with it all that I actually got a little sick a couple of times. Nothing ever really full-blown – it would just feel like the beginnings of a cold or flu but I would always feel better if I could get some good rest. Anyway, that kind of stuff always makes me think of the amazing, courageous single moms (and dads) out there who do it all themselves without the support of a spouse. And it makes me wonder if/how I’ll be able to do it one day when, God willing, there are more kids in the picture. I know that everyone does it so I feel like a wimp to even say all this, but it’s how I was feeling…

Following what felt like a bit of a more difficult month of April, God was so gracious to give us a fabulous month of May. Colt finally got back on a good schedule and is now absolute clockwork – sleeping better than he ever has before. Basically he wakes up around 7:45 or 8am (8:30 when we’re lucky), then naps from 10:15-12:00 and 3:00-4:00 and goes to bed like an angel at 8pm. He eats breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks through the day, and we just went from nursing 4 times down to 3 times per day. He has been in such great spirits this month and has become so much fun. He is crawling everywhere and climbing and standing up on everything. He loves peek-a-boo and will initiate it if he has a towel or something to put in front of his face. He loves books and will point to pictures and turn pages. I can tell that he’s enjoying the park more and more and even climbed up the rock-wall a little bit. In addition to fun with Colt, we have continued to be so thankful for the incredible group of friends that we have here.

OK – now to the pictures!

My First Mother’s Day!

This year was my first time celebrating Mother’s Day as a mom and my sweet husband made sure it was a very fun, special and memorable weekend.

Saturday

Phase 1: Surprise Sushi Lunch with Paige
We had plans on Saturday afternoon to try a new sushi restaurant around the corner from us with the Hudsons so of course I thought nothing of this. When we arrived at the restaurant, however, Michael and Trent handed Paige and me a couple of notes, took the babies and said “Enjoy yourselves – goodbye!” We were both really taken off guard since we had not been suspicious about anything, but we sat down, ordered drinks, and opened the first card. cardThe card basically told us that they had the babies taken care of and to just relax, enjoy our lunch and to open the next card in an hour. In reality, the guys had taken the babies to meet up with Joe for lunch, so while we were doing this: img_6104the boys were doing this:IMG_0372Anyway, after an hour and a bunch of sushi we opened the second card which instructed us to get dessert and then head over to the spa around the corner for a 2pm ressy.

Phase 2: Surprise Spa – Mani, Pedi & Massage
When we arrived at the spa we didn’t know what we were there for, but we soon learned that the boys had made us appointments to get a mani/pedi & a massage.IMG_6977

img_6112 img_6110

It was pure relaxation and so much fun to do together. When we were finished, someone brought a box and a card to Paige and me. Each of the boys had picked out a dress (not a new one or anything – just one from our closet) and shoes for us and the note instructed us to meet them around the corner at a specified address. So, we got changed and headed out!

Phase 3: Surprise Drinks with the Boys at La Mar
As we were walking we realized that the address was for the nearby Peruvian restaurant, La Mar. When we arrived, the boys were waiting for us with pisco sours!IMG_0377As we sat and enjoyed drinks and ceviche, we learned that Uncle Joe was back at our apartment babysitting BOTH babies!IMG_7045 When we went back to the apartment we walked in to find Joe on the floor playing with Colt and Mailey — such a sweet little sight. We finished the evening playing at the park!IMG_0383

Sunday

Phase 4: Lovely Church Service followed by Beautiful Surprise Brunch by Michael
Sunday morning Michael and I went to the early morning service at our church (never thought we would be early service people but we’re up anyway and it works best with Colt’s schedule) and it was absolutely lovely. At one point they had all of the moms in the congregation stand to receive prayer and I was so honored to be able to take part in that. When we got home, Michael went to work at preparing brunch. He made an amazing french toast bake (which had been soaking overnight!). IMG_6979Needless to say I have an amazing, incredibly thoughtful husband and it was a perfect first Mother’s Day weekend. Love these two! IMG_0021

I was actually surprised by how special it felt to be a part of Mother’s Day this year. I was so touched to realize that I was a part of that special group of women, across the world and through all of time, and I’m so thankful that God blessed me with our sweet little Colt who made me Mom.IMG_6865
