Colt’s 1st Birthday Party!

Although we’re not living in the US, normally on the 4th of July Michael & I get together with other expat friends and celebrate America! This year, however, on July 4th we were all totally focused on Brazil’s World Cup game. Therefore, we decided to celebrate the 4th of July on Sunday (July 6th) when we celebrated Colt’s birthday – just 1 day before his actual, July 7 birthday, with a patriotic picnic in the park. Although we’re in the dead of winter, the weather was absolutely gorgeous – high 79 and sunny! It was a perfect day to be outside, hanging out and playing games with friends.

I made the tassel-streamers and was bummed when the park "guards" told us that we weren't able to hang anything from the trees, but we improvised by tying them up to the strollers - thanks to Brett for the genius idea!

Mailey Jane’s 1st Bday!

Colt’s best friend / girlfriend Mailey Jane Hudson had her 1st birthday on Monday, June 9. The party was the previous Saturday (Colt’s 11 month bday) and we had so much fun celebrating her.

Trent & Paige hosted a fabulous party in the park beside their apartment and the afternoon was filled to the brim with great food and drinks, fun games, awesome friends and perfect weather.

Lately: April & May 2014

I can’t believe that we are getting towards the end of May already! At the Harper household, we are starting to get excited about Nana & Papa Harper’s upcoming visit next week, but before they get here, I wanted to post some pictures of the everyday stuff that we’ve been up to lately.

Although things have been really amazing the past couple of months, there have also been a couple of tough moments too.

After returning from South Carolina at the beginning of April, Colt gave me a little bit of a hard time. There was a week during which Michael was traveling for work and Colt was getting his third tooth (the left canine) and he had SUCH a hard time with it. Honestly he was like a completely different baby (so much so that we named this alter-ego Franklin — no offense to any Franklins out there), crying constantly, always needing to be held, not eating well and really not sleeping well. His naps were all over the place and he would wake up once or twice each night with terrible crying. He also had a runny nose, a low-grade fever for a day and one morning when I went to get him from his crib, he had thrown up all over. It was the saddest and grossest little sight – the throw up was matted in his hair and down his sleep-sack. I also realized that he wasn’t quite as good at chewing as I had believed as there were big chunks of black-beans everywhere! Gross. Poor Michael felt so badly being gone (he even surprised me by ordering an amazing sushi delivery for me one day) but honestly it was for the best. He needed to be able to focus on work and I needed to be able to focus on Culhane. Once the tooth popped through he was a lot better, but truthfully all of April was a little touch-and-go.

I think another aspect that made it tougher was his newfound mobility. I am definitely in the chasing-stage and I am constantly amazed at how fast Colt is and how he is consistently most drawn to things that are not for him / dangerous. I mean, who can blame him though — why play with bins full of brightly colored, soft, noisy toys when you can play with an outlet, a trash can, toilet paper or a bottle of olive oil? Poor thing – our apartment is so small and so not-baby proof and he’s at the point where he can move quickly to things but doesn’t yet really get what’s off limits… Anyway, gone are the days of being able to set him down in one room and do something in another. This means that it’s become really hard for me to “accomplish” anything while he is awake during the day. He only naps for 2 1/2 hours so if I am going to shower/get ready, eat lunch, clean up the house and check my email, I am pretty much done. Plus, by the end of the day I’m usually exhausted and sometimes even sore from all of the bending and carrying etc. etc.

Another thing that’s a smidge tricky is that I make all of Colt’s food. I’m not against buying pre-made stuff at all and we use it when we’re traveling, but being here I’m just not crazy about the quality, selection or the price, so I have just made it all myself. This wasn’t such a big task at first but he eats so much now that I feel like I’m constantly trying to keep up with him. And again, it’s something that I have to do during naps or at night because if I’m cooking or cleaning in the kitchen, he follows me in and races straight to all kinds of bad things! (Side note: If anyone out there also made their baby’s food and has any great recipes, I would love to see!)

During the month of April I got so worn down trying to keep up with it all that I actually got a little sick a couple of times. Nothing ever really full-blown – it would just feel like the beginnings of a cold or flu but I would always feel better if I could get some good rest. Anyway, that kind of stuff always makes me think of the amazing, courageous single moms (and dads) out there who do it all themselves without the support of a spouse. And it makes me wonder if/how I’ll be able to do it one day when, God willing, there are more kids in the picture. I know that everyone does it so I feel like a wimp to even say all this, but it’s how I was feeling…

Following what felt like a bit of a more difficult month of April, God was so gracious to give us a fabulous month of May. Colt finally got back on a good schedule and is now absolute clockwork – sleeping better than he ever has before. Basically he wakes up around 7:45 or 8am (8:30 when we’re lucky), then naps from 10:15-12:00 and 3:00-4:00 and goes to bed like an angel at 8pm. He eats breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks through the day, and we just went from nursing 4 times down to 3 times per day. He has been in such great spirits this month and has become so much fun. He is crawling everywhere and climbing and standing up on everything. He loves peek-a-boo and will initiate it if he has a towel or something to put in front of his face. He loves books and will point to pictures and turn pages. I can tell that he’s enjoying the park more and more and even climbed up the rock-wall a little bit. In addition to fun with Colt, we have continued to be so thankful for the incredible group of friends that we have here.

OK – now to the pictures!

Labor Day Beach Weekend

Although we are well on our way into fall here in Brazil, the weather is still beautiful, 70s and perfect for trips to the beach! Last Thursday (May 1) was Brazil’s Labor Day and whenever a holiday falls on a Thursday, everyone also takes Friday off, so Michael, Colt and I joined 9 of our friends (+2 more babies!) and headed to the beach again! It was such an awesome group of friends, a super sick house, gorgeous beaches and what was, in my opinion, perfect beach weather — all in all I have to say it was one of my favorite beach weekends yet. Of course we were all too busy enjoying life to take too many photos but here is what I have!

Easter Weekend in Guaruja

To celebrate Easter this year, Michael, Colt and I joined 3 other sweet families – the Hudsons, Parkers and Winters – and went to a beautiful beach just outside of Guaruja. We have a very generous friend who lent us his family’s beach house mansion and we thoroughly enjoyed every moment: relaxing at the beach, swimming in the pool, playing games, cooking, and generally having a great time. We were a little spoiled as the Parkers brought their nanny AND the house has a maid so…it was really vacation. 🙂

Twenty 7

Last Wednesday was my 27th birthday and the celebrating has not stopped yet!

It started Wednesday morning with our modified tradition of breakfast-in-bed turned just breakfast. (Since Colt serves as my morning alarm-clock, I requested not to be woken up before then so Michael made me breakfast while Colt was eating his!)

Along with a beautiful breakfast, Michael surprised me with a gorgeous orchid that he had hidden away the night before and lots of sweet notes to wake-up to.
IMG_6016Colt was so sweet all day – I think he knew it was a special day! IMG_5979Then we got the apartment decorated with roses for the evening Bachelor finale viewing party.IMG_6030Now, everyone who knows me, knows that I love love. And while some skeptics don’t necessarily equate love with The Bachelor, I am a believer and always have faith that love can and will triumph. I am obsessed with the show. It is my greatest guilty-pleasure, my only reality TV indulgence, and I love it. Anyway, the finale aired in the US on Monday but since we don’t get it here, I buy it on iTunes. Normally the episodes post to iTunes by Tuesday but there is always a delay with the finale so I knew I wouldn’t get it until Wednesday. When I realized that this coincided with my birthday, it was just too good. I avoided social media for a couple days then had 5 of my best girlfriends over to watch. They are the best and brought tons of goodies – as in, great champagne and wine, amazing homemade mac-&-cheese, delish salad, the best cookie dough (which was consumed uncooked, obvi), ice cream and ROSES!!! and together we learned the valuable lesson that “there is no better diet than a man leaving you confused.” I felt so known, loved, and blessed to have these incredible girlfriends – it was a perfect night.

So much fun!!

On Thursday we stayed in and played with Colt, but Michael brought home my fav – sushi for dinner! DSC_0693

Friday night, Michael surprised me with opening weekend tickets to Sala São Paulo, SP’s symphony! He lined up a babysitter and took me out to dinner at this great Italian spot, Famiglia Mancini in the Centro. We don’t go out in the Centro very often (as in, never), because it’s a littttttle dicey, especially at night, but randomly there is this adorable little Italian street tucked away in there called Rua Avanhandava, filled with cute lights and good Italian restaurants. So fun.

IMG_6048 After dinner we skipped over to the symphony and, although I am no expert, it was by far my favorite symphony experience and a true São Paulo highlight. The space was gorgeous and the music was out of this world. It just, takes you away. Anyway, it was the best.IMG_6057IMG_6066On Saturday, my dear friend Paige hosted a pool-party to continue the celebrating!! We had a great lunch, swam in the pool and enjoyed the amazing, famous, Hudson ice-cream-sandwiches!! Too much fun. (Also, Mailey Jane was adorable in the tutu that Colby made her!!)
IMG_6068 1 2 3To top off the celebrations, our awesome friend Tom took Colt and me out for lunch today. Tom and I have been excited ever since Benihana opened a location very near us, but we have not been able to get either Michael or Joe on board with it so finally we just went together. There were onion volcanos, flying knives, and all of the culinary showmanship that one could hope for. It was amazing. #Whatdidyoudolastnight? IMG_6140Thanks to everyone who made 27 so much fun and so special. So far, it’s off to a great start!
