Colt: 2 yrs, 9 months

IMG_2741Handsome boy. I am absolutely dying over you these days. It has been far too long since I did an update on you so this one is going to be long but at this age you don’t have a baby book anymore so this is the only place I have to record things for our records and our memories. And gosh I don’t want to forget this moment in time with you.

Colt developments: Buddy, you are so much fun!

You were a very serious baby and a shy toddler but right before you turned 2, you really came out of your shell and you’ve never gone back. Sometimes it still surprises me how vivacious and hilarious you are!

You are talking up a STORM. Sentences are long, detailed and FUNNY. Some tid-bits from the past week include:
“Let’s hold each other’s hands, Dada.”
“This is a beautiful day. I love to be outside with you.”
“I love my sturdy little brick house. The wolf can’t blow it down. He’s not strong enough. The pigs are safe!” (Currently obsessed with the story of the 3 little pigs…)
“I can do it! You can do it too. You can try!”
“My fingers are salty! Napkin, napkin!”
“Oh! Look at that big elephant. He’s too close to the man. But, he’s nice.”

You’re in a big, “Watch me! Watch me!” phase, although I suspect this may be a “phase” that’s here to stay. And you’ve started doing this thing where if we ask you something to which you don’t know the answer, you get a big smile and respond, “You tell.”

You are incredibly sweet, very loving and affectionate. You will regularly and spontaneously declare, “I love you, Mama!” to me and other family members. If I’m ever hurt you want to give me kisses to make it all better. Whenever I see you in the morning I tell you how happy I am to see you but the other day I was half-asleep and just said, “Hi Colt,” and you responded, “You so happy to see me, Mama?” You’re very in-tune with your emotions and the emotions of others and if you do something bad you’ll say, “You not so happy ’bout that, Mama?”

You have tons of energy and like to be BUSY but I would say that you’re still pretty calm and a little more focused than other kids your age might tend to be. For example, you LOVE puzzles and are excellent at them. Gigi has one of Goldilocks and the 3 bears that has 63 pretty small pieces and you can easily do it by yourself. My mom thinks you have a photographic memory.

IMG_2446IMG_2450

You have known the capital ABCs for a long time but we still have yet to master all of the lowercase ones (q, p, d, b = challenge!). I think it’s because you saw the capital letters on the floor mat in your room in Brazil and in books that we would read but I haven’t been great about sitting and “teaching” you things that aren’t just naturally around us. (But beware! Now that life is settling down I’ll get the flashcards out soon!) That being said, you do know how to spell your name (and Finn, Dada, Gigi and a few other things) and can write your name surprisingly well completely on your own. You randomly initiated it the first time a few weeks ago and just did it. We were shocked!IMG_2405.jpg

You are also VERY good at figuring out what letter different words start with. For example, we can ask you, “Colt, what letter does… “pencil” start with?” And you will either just answer outright “P!” or you will say, “Pencil, peh, peh…P! Pencil start with P!” And now you are starting to figure out other letters / sounds in words – especially the letters that a word ends with. You honestly just started doing this on your own. We had long ago taught you that “Mamma’s favorite letter is M and Dada’s favorite letter is D” etc. and probably a couple of times we had talked about how all letters make different sounds with a few examples but truly one day you just started talking about what letter different words started with. Then we kept talking about it and it naturally just clicked with you. You will still confuse certain letters / sounds that are not as clear (like guessing that queen starts with a k) but you definitely get the point of it.

We have used this skill to start work on reading and spelling. We’ll read from a page in a book, for example, “The boy is playing with the dog.” And I’ll say, what does “boy” start with? You’ll say “B.” Then I’ll say, “OK, can you figure out which word on the page is boy? Which words starts with a b?” Then you’ll find it and we’ll sound out the rest of the word and talk about how the letters make the sounds that we read out loud. Or you’ll have your ABC puzzle blocks and I will ask, “What does ‘cat’ start with?” and you’ll grab the c. Then, “What is the next letter which makes the aaaah sound in cat?” and you’ll grab the a, etc.

You’re also kind of getting into math! You know that “5 and 5 is 10” and that “two 5’s is 10” and that “5 plus 5 is 10.” You know by heart 1+1, 5+5 and you are quick with anything plus 1 but you can also do any math that you can count with your fingers (totaling less than 10). You can count to 11, get a little mixed up on 12-15 but then you’ve picked up on how the sequences progress. You still need our help to realize that the next sequence is of twenties or thirties but if we say, “twenty, twenty one” you can continue on with the rest.

You also love to be outside an in motion. You still love your scooter and you’re so happy that we live across the street from a huge park with lots of green space, “scooter paths,” sport fields and courts and a playground! We scoot on over there almost every day.

You also like to play in the yard. You still have a strong kick and despite being very right handed (and footed), your daddy taught you to swing lefty from a young age so consequently you swing a bat and a golf club lefty! You make great contact though! Oh, and you love jumping. You’ll skip the bottom 1 or 2 stairs and jump whenever you go downstairs in our house, often telling me that “there’s bugs on it – let’s jump OVER the bugs!” (Although sometimes in the morning you’ll be sluggish and say, “It’s too early to jump. Jus’ step on the bugs.” So funny!)

Your Portuguese skills were AWESOME when we left Brazil and are TERRIBLE already. Sad about this one. We brought back a bunch of Portuguese language cartoon DVDs so anytime you watch TV at home (we still do it twice/day while drinking milk – after waking up in the morning and after nap/quiet time in the afternoon) you are watching it in Portuguese. You seem to still understand some of it but you really struggle to come up with words on your own – even basic things like colors are getting mixed up. We are looking into Portuguese speaking babysitters and the goal is to have you with a native speaker twice a week just to play, read, talk, etc.

That being said you keep us laughing all day long with all the funny things you do including making up your own languages. We will have you count to 10 in English, Portuguese and then a made up language and you come up with something different and hilarious every time. You love to dance, sing, color, read books and generally PLAY.

You’re very particular but I would not describe you as too headstrong or stubborn. You are eager to please us and are generally very obedient. That being said, we try to be consistent with our discipline and use the “bad choices” as opportunities to remind you that we all fall short and are in need of a Savior, Jesus, to reconcile us to our perfect and holy God. I don’t know how much you are understanding but I love to hear you talk about God. Sometimes you talk about how your “Father is everywhere,” or how “God made the pink in the sky.” But other times it’s, “Jesus and God go poopoo in the potty.” So…you give us a little bit of a mix.

Health: Praise be to God that you continue to be a happy, healthy guy. Little colds from time to time but still no antibiotics in your system! Really thankful for this one. It’s actually shocking given how much you travel and basically eat off airport floors but we just tell ourselves that it’s developing in you a strong immune system and it seems like so far that’s true! Not sure your height / weight but you’re wearing 3T clothing and size 8.5 shoe.

Feeding: I am thankful that you have been making huge progress in this area. You were SUCH a picky eater and suddenly you’re becoming much more open to trying new things. Most recently you’ve discovered your love for lima beans, grapes, oranges, fried okra and hard boiled eggs (dying them for Easter helped!) and you are happy to eat a big bowl of sautéed spinach or even some boiled broccoli. Favorites are still smoked salmon, hummus and the classics of cheese, yogurt and all “snack” foods, although we REALLY try to avoid snacking between meals so that you are more excited about meals.

Sleeping: A few updates in this area. First, just before we moved into our new house, we transitioned you from the crib into a big boy bed! image1You never really tried to climb out of the crib but you definitely could have if you had wanted to and it was just time. My grandfather, Papa Fincher, had kept his “youth bed” which his grandfather gave him when he was 5 years old and he recently had it refinished for us. It is a charming old wooden spindle bed. We had to order a custom mattress and sheets since no one makes youth beds anymore but it’s adorable and you love your big boy bed! For the first few days we made it a big rule that you couldn’t get out of bed while “the clock was blue” (in this post I wrote about your Tot Clock but truly – it’s THE BEST!) and after a couple days of enforcing the rule, you got it no problem.

Recently, however, you have given up your afternoon nap. After a week straight of you not napping and instead playing in your bed for 2 hours each day I decided that you were officially done with it. We have now instituted “quiet time” for an hour and a half where you are able to play in your room. You have a big basket beside your bed and we choose different toys to go in the basket and you’re allowed to play with anything in the basket during that time. We use your tot-clock for this as well and you play happily for the designated time. Watching you on the monitor in there makes me laugh so much. The other day you lined up all of your animals on one wall and then performed in front of them the ABCs and The Wheels on the Bus songs. So funny! This transition means you are getting pretty sleepy by 7pm and the other day you literally drifted off while sitting up at the dinner table so come bedtime you go to sleep much more quickly.

Our bedtime “routine” isn’t much of a routine but we do try to pray for you each night and sing to you. Your bedtime song is “You are my sunshine” and you like to sing it with us now. Sometimes it’s hard for me to leave your room at night because you’re just painfully sweet. I’ll snuggle up close to you and you put your little hands on my face and give me hugs and kisses. The other day I said I was pretending to be Colt and you could pretend to be Mommy and tuck me in. You said, “I rub your back and sing Sunshine!” so I curled up and you literally rubbed my back and sang “You are my sunshine” to me. It may have been the sweetest moment of my life.

Schedule: Your current schedule is:
7:40am You normally wake up and play in your bed.
7:50 Your clock changes to yellow and you shout, “It’s YELLOW! Time to get up!!” Potty, brush teeth.
8:00-8:30 You drink lukewarm milk (gross) and watch Portuguese cartoons while I get myself some coffee and feed your brother.
8:45 Breakfast time – always a banana with some yogurt!
9:00 Change clothes, get ready for the day.
9:30-12:00 Morning activity (we do most of our “outings” in the mornings be it a trip to the zoo or the grocery store)
12:30 Lunch
1:30-3:00 Quiet time in your room
3:00-3:30 Milk and cartoons again
4:00-6:00 Afternoon activity (playing in the yard, going to the park, etc.)
6:30 Dinner time!
7:15 Bath (sometimes) and Jesus Storybook Bible reading with Dad
8:00 Bedtime!

Mama’s Thoughts: Being your mom is the best. Colt, I am literally bursting with love for you. It feels like it’s too much. Too much fun. Too much joy. Too much laughter. Too much cuteness. Too much blessing. I spend my day thanking and praising God for you, your brother and your dad. I feel so aware that these are the best of days. And they go so quickly. I know that there are seasons to life and I may not always want to freeze time on each season, but on this one I can truly say that I do. But part of the beauty is the way that time continues to move and you continue to grow and develop into your own person. And what a wonderful person you are sweet one. I love you tremendously, to the moon and back.image2

The Storm

Days before Finn was born, I wrote a post called The Calm Before the Storm. We were in that special season of life, awaiting the birth of a new baby, and things were calm. But Michael and I also knew that we were on the cusp of many other changes that would rock our worlds like crazy.

As we sat in expectation of Fincher’s arrival, we were also working towards a move back to the US. At the time, we weren’t sure if Michael would get the position at the DOJ or if he would pursue a transfer to Jones Day’s DC office, and we continue to be surprised along this journey as it has actually been a little bit of both. But I’m getting ahead of myself…

There is so much that I want to write about, to document and capture for our records – for our memories – but I think before I can write about the moments and the details I need to go through the big-picture saga that has been the past few months. It certainly felt like a storm, but by God’s grace I think we are finally walking out on the other side.

We welcomed sweet Fincher in mid-August and then had a stream of grandparents visiting for the next 6 weeks. I had a pretty brutal arm infection that made me miserable for a couple weeks and then we were to October. In October Michael completed his final interviews with the DOJ and was over the moon to be offered a position with them, pending a routine background check. We did an incredible 5 day beach trip with our best friends in Brazil and had an unforgettable time (still planning to post on that trip!). And then, in the blink of an eye, we were in November. We basically spent that month spending time with our friends, going out to all of our favorite places a final time (or two) and then trying to pack bags for the boys and me for an indefinite amount of time, that we estimated would be about 3 months. Slightly overwhelming. But we did it.

IMG_0650.JPG

We spent Thanksgiving in Arizona since Michael was in one of his best friend’s weddings that weekend. It was a magical but whirlwind week in Phoenix celebrating Thanksgiving + an Indian / Vietnamese / American wedding. After that Michael returned to Brazil to work and to get our apartment packed up, etc. and I flew with the boys to South Carolina (my first flight with both by myself!). IMG_1269

At this point, we had only looked at houses online but were hoping to buy a house in Arlington or Alexandria. Michael and I had booked flights to meet each other there mid-December and then we would return to SC for Christmas, but after a few days in SC, my mom and I decided to just throw the boys in the car and drive up for the open houses that weekend. It was a total whim, last-minute decision but on Saturday, December 5 we packed up her car and told those sweet boys that we were going on a little adventure to find a house! 10 hours later we pulled into our hotel in Arlington and the next morning we started hitting the open houses. I had been especially compelled to come by one particular house that I was pretty convinced would be our home. We were the first ones in the door for the open house and as soon as we walked in the realtor told us that it had just gone under contract the night prior. I almost burst into tears. I would not have just driven 10 hours with a 3.5 month old and a 2.5 year old if this house was not available. It was all I could do not to cry but God, in His grace, gave me faith that He had other reasons for us to be there. We continued to look at other houses on my list and it was disappointment after disappointment, until… we came to OUR HOUSE! I instantly fell in love. It had just gone on the market and offers were due in 2 days. Michael would be arriving in DC in 9 days. Too late. That night my mom and I did the 10 hour drive back to SC and by Tuesday we were under contract. It was pretty stressful to buy a house apart from Michael – especially since he had never even laid eyes on it!! but even more so because it was a competitive situation with 10 offers… Plus Michael was really busy with work and was in the middle of getting our apartment packed up in São Paulo so he hardly had time to even think about it all! So when Michael arrived in DC on December 15 to “look at houses,” he was actually able to go to the home inspection! I left Colt with my mom so Finn & I could meet Michael up here and we were finally able to see the home together. I was SO relieved when he said that he loved it as much as I did. Maybe more. 🙂

Next we flew back to SC where we spent a lovely Christmas and then it was out to Arizona for New Years and Finn’s baptism which was made extra special as my parents, grandparents, aunt and Finn’s godparents (Trent & Paige Hudson) plus their girls all joined Michael’s family for a weekend full of fun! The Harpers were the most gracious hosts and we had an awesome time together (post coming on this as well!).

After Arizona, Michael went back to DC to work out of Jones Day’s DC office and I went back to SC with the boys. At this point I was fully engaged with trying to figure out how to furnish the house that we had just purchased. We had sold a lot of our furniture in Brazil since most of it didn’t seem like it was worth paying to move anyway. We did ship a few furniture pieces along with our dishes, other kitchen items, clothes, toys, etc. but we really had no idea when to expect its arrival (Brazil customs can be quite unpredictable and we had heard anywhere from 3-4 even 5 months). We would close on the house mid-January but rent-back through mid-February so I did have some time.

The second week of January Michael bought a minivan for us and then drove it to SC to visit us for the weekend. (Another big purchase that was a little stressful to do without the other person. Also, we are now minivan owners and I’ll never go back. At least not while I have kids in carseats. So, pretty much never.) The third weekend of January was MLK weekend. Michael trained from DC to NYC to see his brother and some friends and I left Colt with my mom and took Finn on a fun weekend trip to Denver where I met up with 5 of my São Paulo girlfriends who are now spread out all around the country. It was a blast to be reunited! Then I returned to SC and Michael returned to DC. A couple of days later he flew back to Brazil to do a final close-out of his work at Jones Day and I *brilliantly* decided that this was the time to potty train Colt… More on that later but let’s just say that doing it without Michael, while I was nursing Finn 5x/day, on month 2 of living out of suitcases…not the best idea. My mom is a saint but I still have PTSD and he’s still in pull-ups…

Finally February arrived and Michael had officially completed his work with Jones Day. He came to SC for a couple of days then we all flew to Arizona to visit his family for a fun-filled week in Phoenix and Hidden Valley. Then we were back to South Carolina for one more week until we packed everything into a U-Haul, IMG_1930drove for 12 hours (a potty training child + a U-Haul trailer attached make the drive a little longer…) up to DC. We arrived around 3am, spent the night in a hotel and then on the morning of February 18, almost exactly 3 months from the day I left Brazil, we finally arrived at our new and totally empty house. It was pretty empty for a week which was really strange to live through but we used that time for me to paint Colt’s room and get our basics settled. We had borrowed some sheets, towels, blankets, dishes and cookware from my mom to survive. Little things were delivered day by day but during the second week we had a big Ikea delivery (read HOURS of assembly – Michael is a now a total pro), our shipment from Brazil arrived AND a big furniture order that I had placed for some of the more major items arrived as well. It was pretty overwhelming trying to get settled without having any help with the kids. I mean, at this point I was nursing Finn 4-5x/day and feeding him solids 2-3x and Colt is awesome but he’s still a 2 and a half year old boy… Michael and I were just in constant motion. We would wake up each morning so stiff, sore and exhausted, but knowing we were one step closer to the end. (Praise God that at least our kids are good sleepers!)

Then, on top of all the hectic craziness going on in our lives, after Michael officially left Jones Day, the DOJ calls to inform him that due to his time abroad, the background check portion was going to be a little different for him and would probably last about another year… We were pretty thrown off by this but were very thankful when Jones Day quickly said that they would be happy to have him back. He is working out of the DC office with regular travel to Brazil so that he can remain a part of the team down there as well. Although it was a curve ball, we already see it working out this way for the best.

Anyway, here we are now. Eventually we were able to get (mostly) settled into our home and I can’t even begin to express how good that feels. I’m lighting candles and drinking wine or tea every night just feeling very zen. 🙂 One of the best moments was hanging up all of the kids’ clothes in their closets. After living out of suitcases for 3 months, constantly packing and unpacking and repacking again, it was like taking a deep breath.

Michael’s parents came to visit for a couple days which was great and then he finally started working again on Monday. My dad was actually in town for a couple days right when our shipment arrived so he was able to swing by and see the house and the boys for a little bit but my mom hadn’t been here yet (not since she saw it with me while house-hunting!) so she came up to visit for the week. Michael is traveling to Brazil next week for work so we decided I’d take the kids to SC for the week and Michael will just meet us there and we can all drive back up together on Easter Sunday evening. And then starts real real life. Where Michael is working and I am home with the kids. In our house. In America. With our minivan.

And I’m just so thankful to now be writing all of this on THIS side of it all. It literally feels like we climbed a mountain and are coming out on top, looking at this new beautiful view of the new chapter we have here. And we are so thankful for all that God has already given us in and through this and we so look forward to living in the normal days of life ahead.IMG_2191

Fincher’s 3rd Month

Happy 3 months little Finn!IMG_3227

Finn Developments: Praise God you continue to grow beautifully!

Weight: We took you in on Monday and you were 14.33 lbs – big boy!
Height: 25.2 inches (91st %)
Clothes: 3-6 months.
Diapers: Size 2.

Sweet boy, I am happy to say I think your baby blues are here to stay! You finally are starting to grow some (subtle) hair on the top of your head but basically you look like a very sweet but very old man. Most of the acne and dandruff has cleared up too!

Finn – what a great month this has been with you!! Just after you turned 2 months I started to really figure you out and now that I know all of your cues, you’re seriously the easiest baby on planet Earth. Multiple days will pass where you literally do not cry. It’s crazy. We had an 11 hour car ride the other day (9:30am – 8:30pm) and I’ll write about that whole saga later but you only cried for a grand total of 4 minutes the whole trip. I couldn’t believe it.

You are so calm and peaceful. You love it when people come talk to you and play with you and always reward us with heart melting smiles and the sweetest sounding coos. Sometimes it seems like you’re trying to imitate the sounds we make. You have even giggled for your dad and me a couple times!

Although you are getting stronger, your sweet cheeks do struggle to stand up against the pull of gravity. You can sit up well but your head does want to rest on your chest pretty quickly. You hold your head up better when you’re on your tummy but we have some work to do here.

You continue to be healthy but had your first fever on Monday. There were really no other symptoms and thankfully it only lasted about 24 hours so we just gave you a little ibuprofen and tylenol.

Schedule: We are still on an awesome schedule with you and it’s a big part of why you’re so easy!

8:15 am First morning feed.
11:00 am Lunch feed.
2:30 pm Snack feed.
6:00 pm Dinner feed.
8:45 pm Last feed of the night.
10:00 pm Bedtime

Eating: As seen above you are still eating 5 times / day. You normally spend 4-10 minutes on each side. You’re an easy eater and we’re still on 100% mama’s milk.

Sleep: What a monster sleeper you are! Easiest sleeper of all time! As noted above, at night you go an 11-13 hour stretch between feeds and you’re sleeping for most of those hours. Honestly, since you’ve been born I don’t think you’ve given us a single terrible night. (I can think of 2 nights in the first month that required us getting up more than twice but that’s it!) All that’s to say, this is God’s grace. I have no idea why you’ve been so easy. I look back at my records of Colt and you sleep SO much better than he did even though I feel like we’re doing most things very similarly. The only differences are that you’re on a more regular schedule during the day (schedule not just routine) and you’re bigger than he was…not sure if those have made much of a difference but I tend to think it’s just that every baby is different. At any rate, I’m GRATEFUL!

Mom: I am finally really feeling like myself again! The first month was all about recovering from the labor & delivery and the second month was dominated by the infection I got in my arm but now, praise God, I am healthy and feeling good again. And I’ve really been able to enjoy being your mom on a whole new level. You are just a joy for me and I cherish my time with you sweet Finn. I love you!!

They were only able to stay for about 10 days but true to form, we packed a lot in! It was a great mix of fun times with friends, down-time with family and then a great getaway to one of our favorite places – the Fasano hotel at the Fazenda Boa Vista.

During the week Sharon & Ollie developed a morning “tradition” with Colt. They would come over by 7:30am to be here when he woke up (so that Michael and I could get a little more sleep or Michael could go work out). They would do his whole milk, play, breakfast routine and then they would walk down the street with him to our grocery store. The grocery store is pretty nice and it has a great little cafe where they would sit and have coffee while Colt colored and snacked on pão de queijo. So sweet AND helpful to Mom and Dad! Then we would try to do something fun for lunches and dinners.

As I mentioned in my last post, I was actually battling a very painful arm infection through the Harpers’ entire visit but unfortunately it was the worst during our last weekend together at the Fazenda. On Saturday morning, Michael, Finn & I had to drive to the hospital for me to have a little “operation” on my arm and we were gone most of the day.

Thankfully, despite all I was going through, Colt was having the time of his life with Nana and Papa at the Fazenda!

We love you Nana & Papa! Thank you for a great visit and for all the ways you helped us out and loved on our boys! XO

Fincher’s 2nd Month!

On Sunday you turned 2 months my dear love, Finn!

Happy boy!

Finn Developments: Handsome boy, I absolutely love watching you grow and turn into your own little person!

Weight: Doctor’s appointment next week! You are definitely chunking up nicely but you’re not quite as roly-poly as your brother was at this stage. You have the lovely gift of showing it all in your sweet face first.
Height: Will find out soon!
Clothes: 3 months.
Diapers: Size 1.

Finn, you still have gorgeous blue eyes (hoping they stay blue!) and very little hair that’s kind of a light auburn color. Your acne has mostly cleared up (for now) but you are still a little dandruffy.

I am thankful that your personality continues to be pretty calm and laid back. Some of our friends joke that they never see you awake since you’re pretty reliable about sleeping in the stroller whenever we’re out and about.

Sometimes you can be fussier in the evening between your last two feeds. It’s easy enough to manage and to calm and soothe you IF there are two adults home, but since that’s also the time that your brother has dinner, has his bath and goes to bed, it’s a challenge to do solo. Your dad was traveling for 5 nights a couple weeks ago so 2 or 3 of our evenings were tough. One evening I tried to hold you in the carrier through it but that was kind of a mess too. However, I figure a little evening cry-sesh is a good lung workout and just gets you ready for a long night’s sleep, right? 😉

You’ve only given me a hard time in public once when we went downstairs to play one evening with your brother. At first you were hanging out in your stroller then slowly started fussing. I thought you would calm down but it just escalated more and more until you were absolutely wailing! It wouldn’t have been a big deal but of course your brother didn’t get it and wanted “one more slide! one more slide!” then he had to get on his scooter, put on his helmet, etc. before we could get out of there. It was kind of a scene and I had JUST told another mom down there that having 2 was great and “not too hard” so honestly it serves me right for having said that. 🙂

The most fun development of month 2 is that you started smiling, Finn! And boy, do you give some big ones. It melts my heart and brings so much joy to our life. Colt loves it too, “Finn happy! Finn smiling! Tiny little Finn!” {Heart explosion.}

Schedule: We are on a regular schedule with you and I am so grateful. It makes it easy for me to know what to expect and know how to plan, but it’s also easy to adjust when needed to fit into my daily plans. And I think it helped you start sleeping through the night so early which is just everything when there are multiple kids involved.

7:30 am First morning feed.
11:00 am Lunch feed.
2:30 pm Snack feed.
6:00 pm Dinner feed.
9:30 pm Last feed of the night.
11:00 pm Bedtime for Finn & Mom.

Eating: As seen above you are eating 5 times / day. You kept pushing your middle-of-the-night-feed later and later, from 3am to 4 to 5 to 6 and now to 7:30ish so we just “merged” that one with the first morning feed and you never seemed to miss it.  You normally spend 7-10 minutes per side. You’re a good eater and we’re still on 100% mama’s milk.

Sleep: What a good sleeper you are! Even easier than your brother!! As noted above, at night you’re giving us a 10 hour stretch between feeds and you’re sleeping for 8.5 of those hours. This started at about 7 weeks and was my saving grace while your dad was out of town.

Mom: I’ve kind of gone through the ringer this month. Just as I was clearing recovery from the delivery I got a random infection under my arm. I had always had a small cyst under my arm and one night it started to feel sensitive. It hurt more each day and after a couple of days it had grown pretty large and was quite painful. I went to the doctor to have it drained and it was one of the most painful 20 minutes of my life and unfortunately it just got worse from there. That appointment was on a Thursday and late Friday night I woke Michael up just crying. I was in so much pain and it was clear I was not improving. The infection had turned into a legitimate boil the size of a cherry. So gross. I couldn’t put my arm down but it hurt to lift it as well. I couldn’t sleep at night. In order to nurse Finn, other people had to hold him up to me and half the time I’d be in tears from the pain of it all. On Saturday we met my doctor at the hospital and she went ahead and put me under so that she could go in and remove as much of it as possible. When she was finished she left a straw in to maintain an opening so that it could continue to drain. Gross. After that I finally started to feel less pain but I went on a stronger antibiotic since the first one I was on did not work. This antibiotic was “OK” to nurse through but not ideal so while I did continue to nurse, we also emptied our freezer of all my frozen milk to minimize the amount of antibiotic that Finn received. And I just prayed for him through each feeding that he would not be negatively affected by it. Praise God that so far he has showed no indication of being affected. Anyway, the straw was in for about a week and then it was removed only to leave a hole in my arm. Then that started to heal strangely so I had to go back and have more stuff removed this past week. I think it is FINALLY healing properly so I thank God for that. Anyway, it was just such a strange, painful and stressful thing to go through while also trying to take care of a 2 year old and 1 month old and I am so thankful that it’s over.

OTHERwise, I am doing great and love being a mom of two sweet boys. It’s an adventure but so much joy each day.
