US Whirlwind Tour: Stop 3 – Christy & TJ’s Wedding

From South Carolina, Michael and I made our way to the beautiful island of Coronado, off the coast of San Diego, for Michael’s oldest sister – Christy – and TJ’s wedding.

But first, let me back up a little bit…to December 2010.  Michael and I were in Phoenix for Christmas.  Christy was single and ready to mingle.  So, in the most tactful way possible, I tried to encourage her to get on Match.com as a way to meet new people.  One month later, Michael & I received the following email from Christy, “So I thought about what Ashley said and bit the bullet and went on Match.com. I now have a couple dates lined up….if this fails I am hunting u down.”  Thankfully for me, Christy and TJ, this did NOT fail and she met the love of her life.  🙂
**Apologies if you heard this story at their wedding, but it’s the closest thing I have to a matchmaking success, so I want to take full credit.**

Anyway, ever since Christy was a little girl, she knew that she wanted to get married on the beach in Coronado.  In fact, I think she says that she has had the whole thing planned since she was about 12 (which actually proved to be quite helpful since Christy and TJ were only engaged for 7 months and didn’t have a ton of time to plan).

Last Christmas, Christy & TJ handed out cards to all of the kids asking us to be in their wedding.  I was so honored to be a bridesmaid, Shannon & Lise were co-maids of honor, Joe was a groomsman and played music at the ceremony, and Michael was the OFFICIANT!  A major honor with a lot of pressure!  But he did an absolutely beautiful job.  The entire weekend was spectacular, so let me get to it!

US Whirlwind Tour: Stop 2 – South Carolina!

Stop #2 of our trip back to the US was my sweet homestate of South Carolina.  We arrived at my parents’ house Sunday night just in time to enjoy one of Michael’s and my favorite home-cooked meals (poppyseed chicken – shout out Mere!) and The Bachelorette finale — LIVE.  Now, this may sound bad to those of you out there who don’t know how to appreciate the amazingness and glory of The Bachelorette (Laine Evans – I saw your Twitter status the night of the finale!), but this was truly a highlight of the trip for me.  Maybe THE highlight of the trip.  OK, maybe that is an exaggeration.  MAYBE.  Anyway, after struggling under the harsh conditions in São Paulo where I have to wait until Tuesday for The Bachette to be available on iTunes, it was amazing to be able to watch it in real time.  Especially since this was the finale.  I am so happy that Emily picked Jef and I am SURE that they will live happily ever after (and have the best looking children of all time).

Speaking of adorable babies, the true highlight of South Carolina was spending time with Augusta Clare!  Although Brad was sick with a double ear infection, Suzanne was so awesome and came to Columbia to let Michael and me hang out with her and Augusta Clare. Michael hadn’t seen AC since Thanksgiving and couldn’t believe how much she had changed.  She was crawling around, pulling up on furniture, laughing and squealing…lots of fun!

Augusta Clare loves Uncle Michael!

On Monday we went to my grandparents’ house in Chapin.  They live on a beautiful lake and growing up, my brother and I used to spend summers there.  It is truly one of my favorite places on earth.  While we were there, we had delicious meal of BBQ, hash, green beans, coleslaw, boiled peanuts and homemade peach ice cream (thanks Aunt Sheryl!!) which I think is my absolute favorite food on earth.  It was a beautiful day so we also swam and rode jet-skis on the lake.  All with my sweet family.  A little piece of heaven…

Don’t both Augusta Clare and I look so comfortable and natural?  I’m so great with babies.

Tuesday was filled with even more family.  My parents had my relatives who live in the Columbia area over for drinks and I think there ended up being 27 of us in total.  I absolutely loved it.

AC with Gigi!

Siblings! Papa, Great Aunt Sister and Great Uncle Bill

AC loved her cousin, Jack

Dad, very calmly and seriously, teaching Augusta Clare to read.  I have to say, she seems pretty focused…

AC & Aunt Sheryl!

We love you, Nanny and Papa!

Love my sweet, beautiful parents!

Wednesday morning, Michael and I packed up with Suzanne and Augusta Clare and headed to Charleston where we were happy we got to see Brad who was recovering from feeling sick.  After catching up a bit, Brad drove us to the airport.

So proud of AC’s sweet dad, my big brother Brad!

Thanks to my sweet family for hosting us and making every moment so incredibly special.  Spending that time with all of you was priceless.

Country Roads, Take Me Home

to the place I belong…
(not West Virginia.  South Carolina!)

I know we’ve only been in Brazil for 3 months, but it still felt SO nice to get back home to SC and see my family.  I already posted on the “main event” of my trip, but honestly, every day that I was home was just as fabulous, getting to spend time with the people I love.  My mom is so cute and immediately threw me a lunch to get to know her “Columbia crowd” which consisted of some new neighbors and friends, some of my mom’s old college friends (reunited once again in Columbia) and a couple of cousins who now live close by.  My parents were still living in Newberry when I got married so it was fun getting to spend time with her Columbia gals.  Here are a few shots from the day:

Drinks and appetizers outside on the patio

Sunshine & chit-chat

The table set beautifully! West Point china, hydrangeas from the yard and place cards

I was so happy to be visiting over Mother’s Day, too!  That Sunday, my mom and I headed to Edisto (Dad had work obligations) and spent a few days with my grandparents, my brother, Suzanne and their sweet Augusta Clare, Suzanne’s parents and Suzanne’s sister & her boyfriend!  To me, Edisto is truly like heaven on earth.  I loved every second that we were there, and of course it was amazing to be surrounded by so many special people.

Clearly Augusta Clare was the highlight / entertainment of the weekend.  She’s so awesome.

Augusta Clare and her great grandmother, Clare Fincher!

Suzanne’s dad, Billy, went crabbing in Edisto and somehow my mom and I took all of the crabs with us when we left so we made a night of it — watching American Idol or The Bachelorette, picking out crabs and dipping them in hot, melted butter.  🙂

yum.

The rest of the visit was so great.  I loaded up (2 suitcases full!) of random odds & ends to bring back, and had a ton of fun seeing family.  I miss you already!!

I love my grandparents!!!  Also very cute.  🙂

Great lunch in Chapin at my grandparents’ favorite new spot. With my amazing Aunt Sheryl! xoxoxox

Super Fabulous

A couple of weeks ago, I went back to the US (South Carolina) for the first time since moving to Brazil.  It was a wonderful trip full of family-time, eating shrimp & grits, and loading up on cheap goods from Bed Bath & Beyond, but the REASON I went home, was to be a bridesmaid in Cyrus and Cory’s wedding.  I have a ton of family photos that I want to share from my trip, but their wedding was so super-fabulous, it had to be its own post.

I first met Cyrus over 10 years ago when I was 14 years old.  He won me over immediately and soon sunk his claws into me and convinced me to do my first pageant.  Although the first one was a complete embarrassment, Cyrus ended up carrying me through Miss South Carolina and on to the top 15 at Miss USA.  For me, that was truly a once in a lifetime experience that I can absolutely say I never would have had without him.

Cyrus is such a special person.  I think that one of his greatest gifts (aside from pageant genius) is being able to celebrate people for exactly who they are.  He finds the best in you and makes it shine.  (And he finds the rough places and tells you to wear extra make-up or get a push-up bra.)  And whether the girls who he works with end up walking away with a crown or not, they certainly come away with a renewed sense of self-confidence and a lot of laughs.

Because I have known Cyrus for such a long time and care about him so much, I was a little nervous when he first told me about Cory, but all of my skepticism vanished as soon as I met him.  Cory has such a warm soul, contagious sense of humor and he is KILLER with makeup.  (In fact, he was kind enough to do my makeup on my wedding day and did all of our makeup on HIS wedding day!)  Bonus about Cory — his last name is KING!!  Soul mates?  I think so.  And most importantly, I have never seen Cyrus so happy.  The weekend of their wedding they were both GLOWING.  I am so blessed to know these wonderful men and was honored to share in their special day.   Now, onto the photos!!

The wedding was held at the South Carolina State Museum and the theme was 60’s, kind of MadMen-ish.  Their colors were black, white, silver and pink.  The bridal party was…beautiful.  🙂  And the rest…speaks for itself.

Some of the bridesmaids at the Rehearsal Dinner. L-R: Amanda – Miss SC USA ’04, Lacie – Miss SC USA ’06, Caitlin – Miss SC Teen USA ’07, Erika – Miss SC America ’05 AND Miss SC USA ’12, me – Miss SC USA ’07, Shannon – Miss SC Teen USA ’12. — Kind of hilarious??? And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

The Harpers Hit Brazil

A couple of weeks ago, the Harpers descended on Brazil and in true Harper fashion, we packed a LOT in.  There is no way to do their visit justice in a blog post, but I’ll do my best to hit the highlights.

Pre-visit: Michael, Joe and I flew to Rio on Saturday, the 14th, the day before the Harpers started arriving to check everything out and be sure we got some solid beach-time in.  We had a great day and as we were leaving the beach we spotted some good ole’ Clemson Tiger fans so we grabbed them for a quick pic.  It turns out the family lives a couple of blocks from the beach and is there for a couple of years with Proctor and Gamble.  Sounds like a pretty sweet deal.

Ipanema beach with fellow TIGER FANS!! This one’s for you, Papa! 🙂

Days 1 – 3: Harpers arrived in Rio.  We stayed at the amazing Santa Teresa Hotel and enjoyed exploring the neighborhood of Santa Teresa as well as Ipanema and Copacabana.  Of course, we also toured the Christ the Redeemer statue and climbed to the top of Pão de Açúcar.  Well, we rode the gondola.  Incredible views.  While in Rio, Michael and I celebrated our 2 year anniversary over a fantastic dinner at Aprazivel – with the whole family, of course.  🙂

Day 4 we headed to São Paulo and arrived just in time to tour our apartments, our neighborhood park and have an amazing Brazilian dinner at one of our favorite spots, Espírito Santo, just a few blocks from our new apartment.

Dinner at Espirito Santo! Our favorite neighborhood spot.

Day 5 included tours of both Joe’s and Michael’s offices, fabulous lunch at Dalva e Dito, shopping on Oscar Freire AND Sharon’s miraculous finding of her “mother-of-the-bride” dress for Christy’s wedding!  Christy & TJ – it made us feel like you guys were really with us in spirit.  We capped off the night with incredible views of the city and great caipirinhas at Hotel Unique.

Dalva e Dito

Lise, how many pairs did you take back with you?  🙂

Day 6 we walked around our neighborhoods, checked out a Brazilian art museum, and had an amazing sushi dinner at Nagayama followed by late night live Bossa Nova music and cocktails at the Fasano.
Day 7 was a Saturday so in the morning we checked out the Mercadão and sampled lots of exotic fruits.  Then we headed to Villa Madelena for a “street-art” / graffiti tour followed by live Samba music and great food at Bar Samba!  Then, the Harpers packed their bags and headed for the airport.

Vila Madalena

We hated saying, “Goodbye,” but the sadness was eased a little because Shannon stayed a few extra days with us!  So the next day Shannon, Michael, Joe and I took a little day trip to Embu Das Artes to check out the cute little artisan town.  Then, Shannon and I spent the next few days having lots of adventures around São Paulo from biking in Parque Ibirapuera to a crazy day in Liberdade (Sao Paulo’s “Japan Town”).

Street Fair – Embu Das Artes

Biking in the park. Sorry that I am super awkward with anything sports-related. I can’t help it!

Liberdade. Oh Shan, what a day this was…. 😉

Come back soon!!

Cafe Zim misses you guys! And so do we!

Farkle & Fun

God has been so good to us here and in His grace, He balanced out lasts week’s “adventures & accomplishments” from my last post with a lot of fun and joy too.

On Tuesday our friends Trent and Paige invited Michael and me over for dinner at their apartment.  Paige did make-your-own pizzas that were out of this world.  The crusts were made from nan bread dough (amazing) and then there were toppings for days.  They have a friend who is currently living with them right now so we got to meet her and her boyfriend as well as one of their upstairs neighbors and dear friends.  It was tons of fun and we loved getting to know them better.

Thursday night Michael and I met up for beers after (his) work at a neighborhood spot called Vaca Veia.  Michael happend to go here with Joe when he visited SP last year and loved it.  He was so happy when he realized it was just a few blocks from our apartment.  It serves the coldest beer around.

Friday night we cabbed across the city to Jeff & April’s apartment in Perdizes.  Due to traffic this 20 min drive took three times as long.  And, we happened to pull up at their place literally 3 minutes after a storm had just rolled in.  Now when it storms here – especially during the summer – it’s like, a storm.  A tropical STORM.  Out of nowhere, raindrops the size of cannonballs.  Usually they come and go within an hour, but you do NOT want to be outside when they hit.  Anyway, we proceeded to get DRENCHED in the 20 feet that we walked from the cab to their building.  But these are just details.  The night only got better from there.  April had made tons of great appetizers and her own version of sangria (which was yummmm).  Suzanna and Jeff Jones were there as well so we hung out for a while and then headed out to a neighborhood espeto place, Casa de Espeto.

Jeff & April Yurecko

Suzanna & Jeff Jones

Here, everything comes on espetos (like kababs) and they just constantly come by offering you more food.  If you take something, they write it down on your card and you pay at the end.  We had everything from sausages, steak and chicken to grilled mozzarella and other cheeses to hearts of palm and zucchini…all on a stick.  But the highlight was, of course… CHICKEN HEARTS!  I actually thought that they were mushrooms but the waitress explained that no, these were “corazãos de frango.”  You would think this would be a deterrent but she seemed so genuinely excited about them and nodded her head, insisting that I try them.  So what else was I supposed to do?  Shockingly, they were actually NOT very tasty in my opinion, but I had two, just for the experience.  Everyone at the table actually partook, except for April who insisted that she had already had her share before.

Appetizing...?

Despite the gross chicken hearts, it was a great time.  Live music, perfect company, and otherwise delicious food.  After dinner we headed back to the Yureckos for a lively game of…FARKLE.  Farkle was a first for Michael and me (although we are pretty certain that we actually own the game as well), however I can assure you that it will not be our last run with Farkle.  It was a long, hard-fought game but after an incredible come-back, April came out with the win.

woohoo!

Saturday Michael and I walked around looking at apartments.  Actually, more like looking at apartment buildings, trying to talk doormen, and collecting phone-numbers of real estate brokers to call.  That evening we tried a neighborhood sushi spot, Temakaria, and it was honestly some of the best sushi I’ve EVER had.  Joe met up with us there and then we grabbed a drink at another spot to catch up with him.  So nice having family here!!

Sunday we checked out another church.  Our 4th so far.  We have gone to 2 Brazilian, Portuguese speaking churches and 2 International, English speaking churches.  All of them have been great in different ways, but we’re not sure yet where God is calling us.  For now we are going to keep trying and try some again and continue to pray for direction in that.  It’s hard for us not to miss City Church but we trust that God will lead us to a new church family here.

Anyway, we feel super blessed by all of the warmth, kindness, friendship and hospitality that has been offered to us here, and we are having FUN checking out this new place!
