Lately: April & May 2014

I can’t believe that we are getting towards the end of May already! At the Harper household, we are starting to get excited about Nana & Papa Harper’s upcoming visit next week, but before they get here, I wanted to post some pictures of the everyday stuff that we’ve been up to lately.

Although things have been really amazing the past couple of months, there have also been a couple of tough moments too.

After returning from South Carolina at the beginning of April, Colt gave me a little bit of a hard time. There was a week during which Michael was traveling for work and Colt was getting his third tooth (the left canine) and he had SUCH a hard time with it. Honestly he was like a completely different baby (so much so that we named this alter-ego Franklin — no offense to any Franklins out there), crying constantly, always needing to be held, not eating well and really not sleeping well. His naps were all over the place and he would wake up once or twice each night with terrible crying. He also had a runny nose, a low-grade fever for a day and one morning when I went to get him from his crib, he had thrown up all over. It was the saddest and grossest little sight – the throw up was matted in his hair and down his sleep-sack. I also realized that he wasn’t quite as good at chewing as I had believed as there were big chunks of black-beans everywhere! Gross. Poor Michael felt so badly being gone (he even surprised me by ordering an amazing sushi delivery for me one day) but honestly it was for the best. He needed to be able to focus on work and I needed to be able to focus on Culhane. Once the tooth popped through he was a lot better, but truthfully all of April was a little touch-and-go.

I think another aspect that made it tougher was his newfound mobility. I am definitely in the chasing-stage and I am constantly amazed at how fast Colt is and how he is consistently most drawn to things that are not for him / dangerous. I mean, who can blame him though — why play with bins full of brightly colored, soft, noisy toys when you can play with an outlet, a trash can, toilet paper or a bottle of olive oil? Poor thing – our apartment is so small and so not-baby proof and he’s at the point where he can move quickly to things but doesn’t yet really get what’s off limits… Anyway, gone are the days of being able to set him down in one room and do something in another. This means that it’s become really hard for me to “accomplish” anything while he is awake during the day. He only naps for 2 1/2 hours so if I am going to shower/get ready, eat lunch, clean up the house and check my email, I am pretty much done. Plus, by the end of the day I’m usually exhausted and sometimes even sore from all of the bending and carrying etc. etc.

Another thing that’s a smidge tricky is that I make all of Colt’s food. I’m not against buying pre-made stuff at all and we use it when we’re traveling, but being here I’m just not crazy about the quality, selection or the price, so I have just made it all myself. This wasn’t such a big task at first but he eats so much now that I feel like I’m constantly trying to keep up with him. And again, it’s something that I have to do during naps or at night because if I’m cooking or cleaning in the kitchen, he follows me in and races straight to all kinds of bad things! (Side note: If anyone out there also made their baby’s food and has any great recipes, I would love to see!)

During the month of April I got so worn down trying to keep up with it all that I actually got a little sick a couple of times. Nothing ever really full-blown – it would just feel like the beginnings of a cold or flu but I would always feel better if I could get some good rest. Anyway, that kind of stuff always makes me think of the amazing, courageous single moms (and dads) out there who do it all themselves without the support of a spouse. And it makes me wonder if/how I’ll be able to do it one day when, God willing, there are more kids in the picture. I know that everyone does it so I feel like a wimp to even say all this, but it’s how I was feeling…

Following what felt like a bit of a more difficult month of April, God was so gracious to give us a fabulous month of May. Colt finally got back on a good schedule and is now absolute clockwork – sleeping better than he ever has before. Basically he wakes up around 7:45 or 8am (8:30 when we’re lucky), then naps from 10:15-12:00 and 3:00-4:00 and goes to bed like an angel at 8pm. He eats breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks through the day, and we just went from nursing 4 times down to 3 times per day. He has been in such great spirits this month and has become so much fun. He is crawling everywhere and climbing and standing up on everything. He loves peek-a-boo and will initiate it if he has a towel or something to put in front of his face. He loves books and will point to pictures and turn pages. I can tell that he’s enjoying the park more and more and even climbed up the rock-wall a little bit. In addition to fun with Colt, we have continued to be so thankful for the incredible group of friends that we have here.

OK – now to the pictures!

My First Mother’s Day!

This year was my first time celebrating Mother’s Day as a mom and my sweet husband made sure it was a very fun, special and memorable weekend.

Saturday

Phase 1: Surprise Sushi Lunch with Paige
We had plans on Saturday afternoon to try a new sushi restaurant around the corner from us with the Hudsons so of course I thought nothing of this. When we arrived at the restaurant, however, Michael and Trent handed Paige and me a couple of notes, took the babies and said “Enjoy yourselves – goodbye!” We were both really taken off guard since we had not been suspicious about anything, but we sat down, ordered drinks, and opened the first card. cardThe card basically told us that they had the babies taken care of and to just relax, enjoy our lunch and to open the next card in an hour. In reality, the guys had taken the babies to meet up with Joe for lunch, so while we were doing this: img_6104the boys were doing this:IMG_0372Anyway, after an hour and a bunch of sushi we opened the second card which instructed us to get dessert and then head over to the spa around the corner for a 2pm ressy.

Phase 2: Surprise Spa – Mani, Pedi & Massage
When we arrived at the spa we didn’t know what we were there for, but we soon learned that the boys had made us appointments to get a mani/pedi & a massage.IMG_6977

img_6112 img_6110

It was pure relaxation and so much fun to do together. When we were finished, someone brought a box and a card to Paige and me. Each of the boys had picked out a dress (not a new one or anything – just one from our closet) and shoes for us and the note instructed us to meet them around the corner at a specified address. So, we got changed and headed out!

Phase 3: Surprise Drinks with the Boys at La Mar
As we were walking we realized that the address was for the nearby Peruvian restaurant, La Mar. When we arrived, the boys were waiting for us with pisco sours!IMG_0377As we sat and enjoyed drinks and ceviche, we learned that Uncle Joe was back at our apartment babysitting BOTH babies!IMG_7045 When we went back to the apartment we walked in to find Joe on the floor playing with Colt and Mailey — such a sweet little sight. We finished the evening playing at the park!IMG_0383

Sunday

Phase 4: Lovely Church Service followed by Beautiful Surprise Brunch by Michael
Sunday morning Michael and I went to the early morning service at our church (never thought we would be early service people but we’re up anyway and it works best with Colt’s schedule) and it was absolutely lovely. At one point they had all of the moms in the congregation stand to receive prayer and I was so honored to be able to take part in that. When we got home, Michael went to work at preparing brunch. He made an amazing french toast bake (which had been soaking overnight!). IMG_6979Needless to say I have an amazing, incredibly thoughtful husband and it was a perfect first Mother’s Day weekend. Love these two! IMG_0021

I was actually surprised by how special it felt to be a part of Mother’s Day this year. I was so touched to realize that I was a part of that special group of women, across the world and through all of time, and I’m so thankful that God blessed me with our sweet little Colt who made me Mom.IMG_6865

Spring in South Carolina

Almost 3 weeks ago, Culhane and I went to South Carolina to visit my family for a couple of weeks. Michael had a conference in DC in the middle of our visit and was then able to swing through South Carolina for a few days as well, but it was the first time that Colt and I traveled by ourselves. I was a little intimidated by the idea of a 10+ hour flight with an infant by myself, but God was with us and it was better than I could have hoped. Our flight was an overnight (leaving at 2:30am SP time) so Colt fell asleep at home before we even left for the airport. He woke up at the airport but fell asleep again before we boarded and he didn’t wake up until 8am South Carolina time. He ate, played and was up for 2 hours but then fell asleep again until we landed. Easy-peasy! I was VERY thankful that there were empty seats on the plane and I was able to bring his carseat on with us as that was key.

GOOD (aka sleeping) baby on the flight!

GOOD (aka sleeping) baby on the flight!

Normally we fly into the Columbia airport but there was a direct flight from São Paulo to Charlotte and when flying solo with a baby, a direct flight is so much easier than having to change planes (and re-check bags, go through security again, etc. etc.) so my mom happily agreed to make the drive and meet us there. Colt was awesome on the flight but when we landed he was definitely ready to stretch his legs so my mom drove us straight to Bojangles where I had a huge cup of coffee and Colt was free to move around and make noise! He was SO happy to see my mom and she immediately became his new favorite person. My mom said she thought he could tell that she was my mom and that maybe that’s why he took to her so well.

Happy baby in Gigi's arms!

When he was ready to take a nap again, we hit the road and headed home. After a bath and a change of clothes, he was all cleaned up and ready to play.  He even insisted on wearing the overalls that Brad and I wore when we were his age!

IMG_6276Although my mom had already stocked up on baby food and some of my favorites, we wanted to pick up a few extra things so we took Colt to the grocery store and strapped him in the cart. I know this is a really ordinary thing, but since we usually walk to the grocery store in São Paulo, he had never done this before! Clearly he loved it. IMG_6280

Colt was so happy to be in South Carolina and loved seeing his Pasha too! IMG_6289

Colt is usually a pretty chill, easy baby but during our time in SC he was extra easy, even by his standards. He immediately adjusted from the flight and to the time-zone (only 1 hr off) and was just super fun and playful the entire time. My mom couldn’t wait to take him to the park down the street and we had a blast! IMG_6296

We also tried lots of new foods while we were home. Here he is enjoying some yummy black beans – a great finger food! IMG_6378

One evening my mom, Colt and I drove to Charleston to have dinner with my brother, Suzanne and Augusta Clare. Brad & Suzanne recently built a beautiful house in West Ashley and it was awesome to see how great they’re doing there. Plus it was really fun to get Colt around Augusta Clare! She was such a sweet big-cousin with him. IMG_6343

Then, over the weekend we were so happy to have Michael come visit with us! photoHe showed up and ran a 5K with my cousins, Beau & Henry. Despite the rain, Henry won his age group and both Michael & Beau came in 3rd for theirs!IMG_6600

Beau & Dolores were kind enough to have us over for dinner that weekend and Culhane quickly became best friends with his new favorite babysitter, my sweet cousin Margaret. She was awesome with Colt!Screen Shot 2014-04-09 at 2.15.52 PM

On Sunday, while we all enjoyed a beautiful service at my parents’ church, Culhane enjoyed the church’s nursery and riding around in the 6-person baby-bus! So funny.

The rest of the trip was just amazing time with family and Colt hitting milestone after milestone. My mom is pretty much Super-Grandma and was AWESOME with Culhane. He absolutely adores her and she is SO great with him. She also really gets all of the developmental stuff and pretty much taught him how to crawl, sit up, pull up and talk all in 12 days time. It kiiiiiiiind of makes me question my own parenting abilities as a mother since I am with Culhane all day every day and then I bring him to my mom for 12 days and suddenly he hits all of these major milestones!! Seriously though – she was amazing. Giving him lots of new, fun foods, constantly playing peek-a-boo, riding him around on her shoulders, and literally teaching him to crawl. She even taught him who “Buster” was – the deer-head in their living room. No matter what you were doing, if you asked Colt, “Where’s Buster?” he would turn and look at the deer! I couldn’t believe it.

New Years in Arizona

Upon arriving in Phoenix, the first order of business was to meet our newest nephew – little Julian Joseph Harp, and to introduce him to Colt! These two are about 3 1/2 months apart and we are so thrilled that they will be lifelong friends as well as cousins.

Mike & Moira were so awesome about wanting to be at his baptism that they were the first ones to book their flights for the trip. Then, when we had to change the location, we looked into changing their flights as well, but all things considered we felt like it made the most sense for them to stick with their original itinerary and visit us in Phoenix.

Meeting moments!IMG_3894 IMG_3897 IMG_3901The next day we were all working hard to get ready for the Harper’s holiday party. Shannon’s family was in charge of the luminaries which lit the walkway from the valet station to the party entrance.

DSC_0127I wish I had more photos from the actual event, but we were too busy enjoying ourselves! The party was Mexican & Brazilian themed so they served margaritas and caipirinhas, as well as a Mexican chicken & rice meal along with feijoada, among other things. I think there were about 150 people and it was a blast!

The next morning, Colt went hiking with his dad and godparents.

It’s hard to show how (almost) out of control it was, but I’d say it was a life-long lesson in realizing what a fire-hazard dried out Christmas trees can be. They seriously took about 15 seconds to burn completely.

Happy 2014 everyone!

Christmas in Columbia, SC

Since I’m way behind on posting, the next few will be more pictures than text.

On Christmas Eve, my family gathered at the State Capitol for a little family photo-shoot. My mom likes to take advantage of having the whole group together, especially now that there are little ones in the picture! Culhane wore a sweater, hat and gloves all knitted by my Aunt Sheryl!

IMG_97391 That evening, we all gathered for Christmas Eve service at my parents’ church.DSC_0005 After church, we went to my great Aunt & Uncle’s house with some of my cousins for dinner. Culhane loved getting to hang out with Margaret! DSC_0008 After dinner Michael and I were excited to teach everyone the famous, Harper-family-dice-game! You see, every Christmas Eve in Phoenix, the Harpers gather together with their dear friends, the Griegos, for dinner & gambling. So this year we decided to bring the fun to South Carolina! DSC_0012DSC_0019On Christmas morning, Michael and I snuck off to my parents’ church for a quick but beautiful Christmas service. It’s funny how having a little baby caused both of us to marvel at the miracle of Christ’s birth in a new way, so this Christmas was extra special to us as we considered God’s amazing love and grace to us through Jesus.

When we returned home everyone was in the living room opening gifts, or rather, watching adorable Augusta Clare open gifts.DSC_0037

Culhane’s Baptism Weekend

As Michael and I boarded our plane, heading to the US for Christmas, we thought back to last year and how excited we were to visit our families and share with them our news that we were pregnant. It seemed like that was just yesterday, and yet there we were one year later, this time focused on how to get our 5 1/2 month old baby boy to sleep during the first 10 hour flight. Thankfully, Culhane was awesome during our travels – sleeping 8 hours in the “bassinet” on our overnight flight and then snoozing again for most of the second flight. He also happened to instantly adjust to South Carolina time, despite the 3 hour time-change – we are very grateful to have a good little traveler on our hands (at least so far)!

We arrived in South Carolina on Thursday Dec. 19 and were met by my sweet grandparents who were very excited to meet their great grandson for the first time!IMG_3820 They took us to my parents’ house where we got all settled in and reunited Culhane with his grandparents. He definitely remembered them after having just seen them in São Paulo for Thanksgiving.

On Friday we were so excited to welcome Michael’s parents to South Carolina! My parents hosted a party on Friday night to let our extended family meet Culhane and see Sharon and Ollie and it was so much fun.

Lots of photos in front of the tree!

The next day we toured Sharon & Ollie around downtown Columbia with a visit to the statehouse, my dad’s office and USC’s campus. DSC_0775DSC_0785Next we went to nearby Congaree National Park, for a 2 1/2 mile stroll. DSC_0810DSC_0822DSC_0816DSC_0826Saturday night my parents took us all out for a very special dinner at Garibaldi’s – the restaurant that Michael took my parents to when he asked them if he could marry me! DSC_0836

Then, Sunday morning was the main event – Culhane’s baptism! We had him baptized at my grandparents’ church, St. Peter Lutheran Church, where my niece, Augusta Clare, was also baptized. As I mentioned, the Harpers brought Culhane’s baptismal gown which had been worn by Ollie’s mother and her siblings (starting around 1890), Ollie and some of his cousins, as well as Michael and all of his siblings. Culhane was the first of his generation to wear the gown and Sharon went the extra mile to make it even more special. She had a long slip made (the longest, bottom layer in the photo below) which included the monograms of everyone who had ever been baptized in the gown. She also had the gown cleaned and had an “extender panel” added since our little guy was older than the other babies had been. Anyway, it was so over-the-top amazing and special and we absolutely loved it.

And what a fun surprise when we arrived only to see that Culhane’s amazing godparents, Mike Saign & Moira O’Connell had sent a beautiful cake for us to enjoy! (Also, to their credit they were planning to be at the baptism, but we changed the location from Phoenix to South Carolina at the last second!) DSC_0977DSC_0984Sweet Augusta Clare.DSC_0997DSC_1001

We were all sad to say goodbye to Sharon & Ollie that night, but it was so special to have them there. More on the rest of our time in SC and then our time in PHX soon!
