Desperate Times

Call for desperate measures.

Not sure if you’re aware, but last night was kiiiind of a major night in television for the Harpers.  First, we had the Giants playing, at home, in Game 7 of the National League Championship (where our old apartment building was frequently featured on TV!) AND the final presidential debate.  Currently, Brazil is 2 hours ahead of EST which meant that the debate was on from 11-12:30.  Although our preferred bedtime is more like… 10:30 (don’t judge) we persevered.

Just as the Giants locked up the win to head to the WORLD SERIES! (woop woop) and we turned our attention 100% to the debate, our TV and internet inexplicably stopped working.  We freaked out.  We were frantically unplugging, replugging, pressing buttons… to no avail.  Foiled again by this crazy country!!

Thankfully we have friends down here – Trent & Paige – who we knew were also watching the debate.  They actually don’t even own a TV (which is totally ridiculous but not totally relevant at this point) but they were watching it through YouTube.  So, we called them and listened to the last 40 minutes of the debate through speakerphone.  People.  THIS is how dedicated we are.

Countryside Getaway

Last weekend there was yet another glorious Brazilian holiday.  I’m not exactly sure what this holiday is for but I have heard rumblings that it is in celebration of the Virgin Mary as the Patron Saint of Brazil, whatever that means.  Regardless, for me, it was a sweet escape from the city to spend a weekend laying in hammocks, eating amazing food, snuggling with puppies and hanging out with friends.

One of our friends down here has been working tirelessly updating, renovating, furnishing and building on an incredible property in the countryside of São Paulo.  His family purchased a gorgeous estate and he has been working hard to make it absolutely out-of-this-world.  Because it is a personal property I don’t want to overshare photos of every single room, but trust me…it was unreal.  Michael and I both said that we had never been anywhere like it.

Here are some snapshots of the weekend that included 14 friends, lots of incredible home-cooking, a boys’ golfing trip, silly pool-games, little hikes around the property, and lots of lazy fun.

The most epic breakfast sandwiches (thank you Trent) at the most epic table (thank you Kenneth)

US Whirlwind Tour: Stop 1 – BWad & Katie’s Wedding

Last Tuesday, Michael and I returned from an 11 day, whirlwind trip to the US.  We realized that, including all stops and layovers, we went from: São Paulo, Brazil –> Panama City, Panama –> Newark, NJ –> New York, NY –> Charlotte, NC –> Columbia, SC –> Charleston, SC –> Kansas City, KS –> San Diego, CA –> Los Angelas, CA –> San Salvador, El Salvador –> Bogota, Columbia –> São Paulo, Brazil.  No wonder I was jet lagged for a few days.

So, we started our visit in New Jersey to attend Bradley Walbrdige’s wedding!  BWad is a dear friend of Michael’s from Boston College.  To put it mildly, he is…full of life and personality.  🙂  We were so happy that he found his perfect match in Katie, and they threw one heck of a party to celebrate.  There is no way I will do the weekend justice, but check out some pictures of the fun below:

Rehearsal Dinner:

Hey Tim – thanks for being in the pic

Mountain Weekend, Brazil Style

July 9th is a major holiday in São Paulo, honoring a mostly failed attempt at a revolution back in the 1930’s.  Weird?  I thought so too.  Regardless, for us it meant a day off from work which translated into TRIP TIME!

Michael and I, along with 4 other awesome couples, headed Northeast towards São Luiz do Paraitinga for a weekend in the mountains.  We rented a cool farm property in the middle of nowhere.  There was a “main house” that had the kitchen/dining area, some living space, etc. and then there were little rooms spread out through the property.  The property & area was really beautiful – as in, we had a legit waterfall in the backyard – but the amenities were pretty basic – as in, no hot water – as in, I only showered oncein 3 days.  The main luxury of the rental, in my opinion, was that the caretakers did dishes & cleaned for us AND brought us fresh milk from the cows every morning along with fresh cheese made from the cows’ milk.  Pretty cool, right?

Backyard Waterfall

We ventured into town one day and walked around.

Although charming, there was not too much going on, so to entertain ourselves, we cooked a lot, watched the guys jump in the freezing cold waterfall, played lots of games and stacked lots of cups…

an innocent game that turned into a 5 person, 3 round, round-robin tournament. Round 1: best out of 3. Round 2: best out of 5. Round 3: best out of 7. Undisputed Winner: Jeff Yurecko.

The highlight of the trip, however, was the glorious day we spent at Fazenda Catuçaba.  One of the couples on the trip – Suzanna & Jeff – had spent a year working on this farm and helping build it into the amazing property that it is is now.

Because the staff at Fazenda Catuçaba loves Jeff & Suzanna so much, they were incredibly warm and welcoming to our whole crew. And they allowed us to spend a day horseback riding through their amazing mountains, taking in the breathtaking views.

scared smiles…

Michael…deathly allergic to horses. Watching us saddle-up from a safe distance before hiking the property by foot.

Nervous but ready to go!

Our fearless leader, Jeff.

The view from the top is always the best

Such a great trip.  Big thanks to Suzanna & Jeff for taking us to Fazenda Catuçaba and huge thanks to April for doing a ton of the heavy-lifting and planning of the trip.  For more pics and details, check out April’s blog post on the weekend.

**Most photo credit goes to either April or Jana — thanks girls!!**

Celebrating last night

with fireworks, beers, and a late night with friends and family.  Sound like a typical American 4th of July?  Think again.  It was all in honor of one of the biggest soccer teams in São Paulo, the Corinthians, winning the Copa Libertadores (the biggest South American club competition).  It’s the first time in the history of the team that they have won and it was a BIG deal.  Literally the entire city was watching, and it was at 10 o’clock at night, mind you.  The culture around soccer is amazing here.  I mean, would anyone in the US watch even the Superbowl if it was on a Wed night at 10pm?  Fireworks have been going off since yesterday morning and they still haven’t stopped.  When we walked home after the game last night there were literally things on fire in the street.  No.  Joke.

Here is a little clip of the bar going craaazy when the Corinthians scored their second goal of the game, essentially sealing their win.

PS – Michael has a coworker who went to the game, afterward headed to the stadium where the team returned after the game, then went out RIOTING in the streets.  He went home at 6:30am, showered, and headed off for work.  Brazilians take their soccer SERIOUSLY.

This & That

It’s great to be back in SP.  Michael and I are really enjoying it more and more all the time.  We are having a lot of fun getting to know our neighborhood, hanging out with friends and planning excursions around Brazil.  Below is quick look at some of what we’ve been up to over the past month, but first, a quick

***Update*** Our shipment arrives TOMORROW.  5 months ago TO THE DAY that the movers showed up in San Francisco to pack us up.  We hardly remember what we own but are EXCITED to be able to really unpack, settle, and stop living out of boxes and suitcases.  We still have a couple little things to do around our apartment, but I cannot wait to get the shipment!!  Fingers crossed that everything made it OK!!
