Super Fabulous

A couple of weeks ago, I went back to the US (South Carolina) for the first time since moving to Brazil.  It was a wonderful trip full of family-time, eating shrimp & grits, and loading up on cheap goods from Bed Bath & Beyond, but the REASON I went home, was to be a bridesmaid in Cyrus and Cory’s wedding.  I have a ton of family photos that I want to share from my trip, but their wedding was so super-fabulous, it had to be its own post.

I first met Cyrus over 10 years ago when I was 14 years old.  He won me over immediately and soon sunk his claws into me and convinced me to do my first pageant.  Although the first one was a complete embarrassment, Cyrus ended up carrying me through Miss South Carolina and on to the top 15 at Miss USA.  For me, that was truly a once in a lifetime experience that I can absolutely say I never would have had without him.

Cyrus is such a special person.  I think that one of his greatest gifts (aside from pageant genius) is being able to celebrate people for exactly who they are.  He finds the best in you and makes it shine.  (And he finds the rough places and tells you to wear extra make-up or get a push-up bra.)  And whether the girls who he works with end up walking away with a crown or not, they certainly come away with a renewed sense of self-confidence and a lot of laughs.

Because I have known Cyrus for such a long time and care about him so much, I was a little nervous when he first told me about Cory, but all of my skepticism vanished as soon as I met him.  Cory has such a warm soul, contagious sense of humor and he is KILLER with makeup.  (In fact, he was kind enough to do my makeup on my wedding day and did all of our makeup on HIS wedding day!)  Bonus about Cory — his last name is KING!!  Soul mates?  I think so.  And most importantly, I have never seen Cyrus so happy.  The weekend of their wedding they were both GLOWING.  I am so blessed to know these wonderful men and was honored to share in their special day.   Now, onto the photos!!

The wedding was held at the South Carolina State Museum and the theme was 60’s, kind of MadMen-ish.  Their colors were black, white, silver and pink.  The bridal party was…beautiful.  🙂  And the rest…speaks for itself.

L-R: Amanda – Miss SC USA ’04, Lacie – Miss SC USA ’06, Caitlin – Miss SC Teen USA ’07, Erika – Miss SC America ’05 AND Miss SC USA ’12, me – Miss SC USA ’07, Shannon – Miss SC Teen USA ’12. — Kind of hilarious??? And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

Can You Feel the Love Tonight

I want start by CONGRATULATING the newly engaged couple, Julie Foley and Sebastian Palmer!  Seb and Michael grew up together in Phoenix, and their families are long-time dear friends.  Lucky for us, Seb’s grad school was taking a trip to Brazil last week, so he brought along his girlfriend, took her to Iguazu Falls and got engaged!  Then they returned to SP and stayed with Michael and me for a few extra days at the end of their trip.  It was so wonderful to get to spend that time with them and show off our new city!  Here is a glimpse of the fun we had…

"Welcome to Brazil" at Vaca Veia! Julie, Seb, me, Michael and Joe

Seb getting after his sake-box at sushi. They like to pour the sake into a box and then overflow it into a little plate. Makes it reeeeeally easy to drink.

Out on the town for one of Michael's coworker's birthday celebrations!

Seb & Julie – it was so great having you!  Congratulations on your engagement and best wishes on all of the fun you have ahead.  🙂

Friends, Family & Coxinhas!

Michael and I have been having a blast getting to know the city a little more each day, and the best parts have been the friends, family and a few good coxinhas along the way.  Check it out…

Michael and Joe, running in Parque do Povo. We are so lucky to have family here. Joe has been absolutely amazing, welcoming us to SP.

Mikey's first day of school...errr...work! Lookin' sharp Michael!

Church at the beautiful Paróquia Nossa Senhora do Brasil -- It is a Brazilian church so everything is Portuguese but this church has very detailed programs with most of the liturgy, so that helped us follow along.

Beer and coxinhas at the BEST coxinha spot in SP - Veloso!! With Joe, Sara and Jake (friends of Joe's and ours from SF!), and a new friend, Tom. Seriously, I could have stayed there all day.

Culminating in a big gathering of new, ex-pat friends who came out to welcome us to SP  (thanks to April for organizing)!  We met up at Cervejaria Nacional and ended the night at  at Pe de Manga.  Such a great group from all over, with whom we got connected through: friends of friends, friends of Joe’s, blog-stalking, etc.  I think we met about 15 new people on Saturday but below is a good chunk of the group.

Beijos!

Feijoada anyone?

Since we landed in São Paulo, Michael and I have been loving every second, walking around and getting a feel for this new city that we call home.  We have explored a lot of our neighborhood (Itiam Bibi), but on Saturday we saw lots more of the city with new friends Paige & Trent!

Paige and Trent actually first met Michael’s brother, Joe, while vacationing in Buenos Aires, Argentina.  They lost touch but later ran into each other on the streets of São Paulo.  As it turns out, Trent and Joe work very near each other here.  (Such a small world!)  Anyway, long story short, Joe spent some time with them and thought that we would get along so he connected us a few weeks ago and we set a date to get together on Saturday.  Paige and Trent are both from Oklahoma and their southern hospitality was in full force as they picked Michael and me up at our apartment and commenced to take us on a fabulous driving-tour of the city.  It was great to hear their stories of living in São Paulo and see more of the city.  After the tour we went for a traditional Brazilian lunch of Feijoada and Caipirinhas at a fabulous restaurant, Bar des Arts.

Paige, me, Michael, Trent -- enjoying feijoada and caipirinhas!

Feijoada is basically a stew of black beans with different cuts of beef or pork.  At this particular restaurant they served many different variations of meat that you could choose from.  One of the options was “Pig’s Ear.”  We tried it…kind of a one-time thing…

Feijoada!

After a long and luxurious lunch, Paige & Trent took us by their apartment to have a cup of coffee and review our day’s travels on a map.  They live in a neighborhood called Alto de Pinheros and their apartment has the most amazing views, overlooking a beautiful park and the city.  It was incredible.

View from their balcony - amazing!

And, the hospitality didn’t stop there.  Today, they picked us up and took us to their church with them.  So kind and welcoming.  Thanks Paige & Trent for an amazing first weekend in SP!

Farewell San Francisco…

It makes me sad just writing the title of this post, but alas, Michael and I have packed our bags and said “Farewell” to the beautiful City by the Bay.

It was a crazy final week in San Francisco.  After ringing in the New Year, we had lots of tasks to accomplish, and on Tuesday, somewhere between running errands and packing things up I had my first minor freak-out session.  Michael was at work so I was at home by myself and it was like all of the sudden I realized what we were doing – that we were leaving behind my favorite city that I’ve ever lived in, leaving our little apartment where we began our married life, saying “goodbye” to amazing friends that are once-in-a-lifetime kind of friends, and moving to a country to which I have never been, where they speak a language that I don’t speak, where who knows if I’ll be able to get a real job…it was all a little overwhelming!  But I think those are normal feelings to feel, normal thoughts to be having, right???  Michael was great – so patient with me and assured me that I was completely valid in feeling those things and he reminded me that we would be doing this move together – every step of the way.  So, what else do you do but keep moving forward??

We had a long day Wednesday getting ready for the movers to arrive on Thursday so we treated ourselves to a quick dinner out to…our favorite Brazilian restaurant, Canto do Brasil!  It was a fun little date and Michael did all of the ordering in Portuguese.

At Canto do Brasil (looking a little grimy from working all day)

Thursday morning the movers showed up around 9am and got after it.  I’ll write more later about how we are actually moving and shipping everything but suffice it to say that I was very thankful not to have to pack it all myself.  Thursday night was our last night in our apartment so Michael and I popped a bottle of champagne and toasted our wonderful, sweet, 751 sq. ft., first home together.

To an amazing first 1 year and 9 months of marriage in Apartment 505! 🙂

That night we grabbed a drink with our dear friend Leah at an old favorite, local spot, District, for a glass of wine and a goodbye.

Friday morning Michael and I ran a couple of last minute errands.  Our first-stop was the Police Station to get a letter of good-conduct that we will need to pick up our visas.  Next we dropped off a load at Goodwill before heading back home as the movers returned to finish packing us up.  Things moved quickly and I basically just tried to stay out of their way as all of our belongings made their way into 133 brown boxes…

Our boxes lined the hallways.

The movers finished up around 1pm and Michael and I headed straight to our favorite local lunch/brunch spot, Serpentine.  (If you’re in SF and you’ve never been – check it out!)  It was just as good as always and then we were off to finish some last minute errands before we grabbed our bags and headed to the hotel.  We stayed at the fabulous Hotel Drisco and appreciated even more our incredible view of the city.

Friday night Michael and I got dinner nearby at Nopalito with our very dear friends Mike & Moira and Troy & Christie.  Food was amazing and the company was perfect.

Last meal in SF at Nopalito with the crew. We miss you guys already!!

Then we grabbed drinks at Lion Pub and eventually said our goodbyes.  It is always hard to leave friends but I do think there is something a little less-sad when leaving true, close friends, as you know they will always be in your life.

So, on Saturday morning it was with sad yet thankful and excited hearts that we said goodbye to San Francisco.

(Right now we’re in Phoenix as we await our visa confirmation but more on all that soon!!)

Welcome to 2012!

Michael and I returned to San Francisco for one final week to get moved out of our apartment and to kick off the new year with some of our dearest friends.

We started the night off with appetizers and mint juleps at Christie & Troy’s apartment.  It was great to see Christie since she has been traveling the world for Facebook lately and we’ve missed her around the city.

After some quality catch-up time with the Bienemanns, we cabbed over to La Mar on the Embarcadero to meet up with the rest of the crew for the New Years spectacular.  The night was filled with fabulous ceviche, pisco sours, and other Peruvian specialties, a plethora of New Years toasts that all were required by Mike Saign to give excited to give, an incredible fireworks show over the water, a less incredible DJ, and of course, lots of laughs and memories.  Here is a quick look at our evening…

The 2nd Annual…

HARPER HOLIDAY HOORAH (& “Farewell, We’re Moving to Brazil!”) Party was this past Saturday.  It was a wonderful gathering of great friends, tasty treats, and lots of Christmas cheer.

One of the major highlights of the party is the gift exchange that is always full of surprises and hilarity.

All night I couldn’t stop looking around at all of our friends and thinking how blessed our time in San Francisco has been.  I am so thankful to God for the incredible people who He has put in our lives and for the amazing experiences we have had living here.  Although it is going to be very difficult to leave all that we have here, I pray and trust that God is preparing the path ahead of us as we soon open a new chapter and embark on a new journey.
